Sounds like a good deal OP. Why oh why do these mobile cos. charge 10 a month for 15gb on a dongle and then charge the same amount for way less (700mb on payg, 2gb on equivelant billpay contract) on a mobile phone?

Because the bill-pay option includes a contract. It's a period of guaranteed income for the provider.

Damn I only got this offer last month but they were only offering 10GB a month. Any chance they might up it?

Because they can and if you take your phone to Newry they'll charge you 10 times that.
Those on this deal are being subsidised by others.

I've had it for a while now (this is the second contract with them) and so far the speeds have been the fastest mobile broadband I've used yet. I've used Three, Vodafone, O2 and borrowed E-Mobile for a week (I think). Where I live it's been the fastest and the cheapest with this offer.

My last two speed tests (note the times, the servers are also different):

thats excellent ping times, I get good speeds but fairly crap ping times on mine.

On my mobile I get much better speeds on O2 than meteor. Might just depend where you are, you could be unlikely and be in a blackspot for one network or another.

Is it not 10 per month ? (approx 2.50 per week ? )

It looks like anyone with a college email address can sign up for this. So you could have left college (student or staff), still have a college email address, and get this. Not 100% sure though.

They wanted a student number from me when I got it (in store).

Yeah but I thought you could order the whole thing online and get the USB modem/Hotshot delivered?

Currently claims to be out of stock for me.

It asked me what institute I attended and then forwarded me the a federated login page on the college website before it would show in the basket.

this looks like a great deal. im currently a student with vodafone and am paying 20 euro a month for 10GB (never exceeded this) so i think i'll switch to this as our vodafone contract is up soon.

had O2 before and vodafone is much better but we've moved recently so it might be faster in this spot.

is there anyone who's currently on this (or an O2 broadband dongle in general) who'd let me borrow it to test it to see what the speeds are like?

Here's the coverage map for O2 broadband, you can search for the area yo'll be using it in and see if it suits:

thanks very much. looks like my area is covered by mobile broadband plus coverage. looks like most ares have this. is this the best of the three, the other two being mobile broadband coverage in the home and mobile broadband coverage on the move.

Best thing would be to get a sim and see what signal you pick up on your mobile.

I get 3G and weak 3G with Meteor, none at all out in the west of Ireland. I get mostly H with O2 and have no signal issues. That said other people in my area complain about O2, so maybe its a combination of your exact location and the phone your using. I assume something similar applies to the Modems. I got the meteor modem but returned it within 14days for a refund as the coverage where I am is so poor.

a bit off topic but do you really have to be a student,or is it enough to know someone with a student card and put it on your name :) ?
As for speed im using payg dongle the one 40 and free usb stick and yes the speeds are 7mb on test, faster then eircom BB :D only thing is whit such high speeds it uses up fast if downloading could be 1gb an hour easily. But for browsing and mail its more then enough, and for that price its hard to go wrong when you can have BB anywhere in the country.

Yep, the purple is the strongest coverage of the lot!

In reality how does o2's speed work out at busy times etc?

what documents do i need going into the o2 store in order to get the modem?

i suppose proof of address (household bill), id and colege id as well? friend told me she was able to get it for 3 days to test it and paid 75 euro deposit. she had good speeds in D8.

anybody who is looking for those should sign up tomorrow.. due to an error they are selling the hotshot for €19 its also in their september magazine. when i went instore on thursday to get it he was charging me 29.99 until i pointed out the big poster on display.

He came back and said its an offer for the weekend and its back to full price on Monday.

I had the dongle previously and only ever got 2/3 bars coverage. Now i have full coverage its great.

Could someone clarify what documentation you need in-store to avail of this offer?

I only showed a student id in the shop in Galway. Gave account details for direct debit but don't remember showing proof of address. I paid the 30 with laser so he may have verified account details off of that.
