Hello guys, my home built computer just had a BSOD while installing a critical windows update now im having problems with loading windows.

Every time I get to the log in screen I input my password windows starts but when I get to my "Desktop" all I see is a black screen with my mouse nothing else.

I have tried recovering and repairing using the install cd however nothing changes, it does however work in Safe Mode any advice on how to rectify this, preferably without a complete re-install of windows?

Any help would be greatly appreciated ill keep trying and see if I can find something

Could be hard disk failure. Use a Linux Live CD (such as Ubuntu/Don't install, run from disc) to backup what you can from the drive and then do a hard disk diagnostics scan

They can fail, although as you say are quite a bit more relyable. After heavy use flash memory will degrade over time. Apparently OCZ SSDs made a while back have a big failure rate.

Some brands of SSD have higher failure rates than i would consider acceptable, may i ask what ssd you bought.
I said it before if you need reliability Intel SSD are the only ones i would use.

Yea its a 256GB Samsung 830 Series reviews say they are good and this is the first time it skipped a beat but I guess this is why it says "do not power off while updating windows"

When using the live cd does the hard drive access ok? It could be you have a corrupted Windows install from the switching off while updating, repair installs don't always fix much either

No problems accessing the hard drive I put in a HDD with W7 installed and removed some items from the SSD without issue, Im just going to do a fresh install I think, I saved everything important so it probably the best (easiest :p) solution.

Thank you guys for your help!

Yeah fresh install is probably the best way to go now :)

You might have a problem with your profile, I'd use the boot CD to create a new admin user and see how you get on logging into that account when you reboot..

I know this is a stupid question but did you go into safe-mode and do a system restore from there ? I mean that should have fixed your system.

system restore is better done from safe-mode instead of normal windows operation.

Can you tell me how exactly I go about doing this?I can see any options that stick out as what you are describing.

No, I was doing the restore from the boot CD It never occurred to me that safe mode would be a better option, but thanks for the food for thought Ill be sure to try that if I ever have this issue in the future :D
