Non smoking campus, your thoughts?

So, now that we have a non smoking campus except for the designated spot behind block C, whats your opinion? do you agree or disagree?

As a smoker i feel its a fair idea that people should not be subjected to a cloud of smoke at the various entrances to the blocks, but i feel having one area for the smokers is a bit of an oversight by the college, i don't think the number of staff and students who smoke has been taken into consideration and having this one area could cause problems with overcrowding and people possibly standing on the roads beside the area, surely at least two other designated shelters away from entrances would solve this.

the other issue is, how will this be policed? Will it be a fine system like the library, I've noticed staff have trouble trying to police the noise levels in the library and despite seeing people on their phones, no fines been giving out.

    So what do you think?

Its not possible to police and is too vague.

Am I allowed smoke on my walk from coming in to the college at F and walking to A?

If I smoke not near the entrance at A can I still smoke at the 5 min break in a lecture without having to walk to C?

I personally am not standing at the entrances to the blacks as I don't like blowing smoke at people. Better system would be to stand 10 feet away from all entrances.

This walk over to C nonsense is stupid and will not happen anyway much like library fines.

Agree with above. I'm a non-smoking and never liked walking through plumes of smoke going into A block (was worst for smokers IMO). The should make a small shelter outside A Block, beside the benches for smokers. Would like to see smoking been stopped on the walkway connecting F,E,D blocks mostly.

I would have no problem with smoking while walking around campus, as long as smokers take into consideration people don't like smoke been blown at them.

But as Don said above, I doubt this will work. Only people who will enforce it will be security, and they can't be everywhere at once.

I believe the problem is not smoking, it's assh*les... Perhaps they should just have an assh*le shelter?

Can't see it being enforced anyway. People should have the cop on to not be smoking in the doorways anyway, and to put their butts/stubs in the bin rather then flicking them away. Not like there's a shortage of bins.

Guarantee if security just shot anyone smoking within 15 feet of a doorway with a super soaker, the problem would melt away in a matter of days.

Don't really know what that's supposed to mean:confused:

But have to say I agree with what is mostly being said, I wouldn't stand in the doorways myself and in general in public spaces I.e bus stops, train station or ques I would not have a smoke unless there was enough space that I could move away and have one, as a smoker I don't appreciate getting smoke blown into my face in this situation, it's just rude.

I wouldn't smoke in my home either, anyway I think it could work well without being policed too heavy if there is better facilities provided, but in its current form it's going to be difficult for the college to implement

I will however abide by the rules as like I said in the op I think it's a fair idea.

I was referring to the people (I've noticed it mostly in A Block, and it happens every single day) that during breaks in classes etc, decide to light up once they're just beyond the threshold of the door, let alone stand to the side, they just stand, sometimes in groups, right in the f**king flipping middle of the doorway.

And if it's raining/cold, the number of smokers in the doorway just gets worse.

I believe that it's these, shall we say, inconsiderate people who have caused the rest of the decent, good willed, considerate smokers to be shunned off to the smoking area should they want to have a ciggy.

I also believe that while the considerate smokers will perhaps follow the new rules and use the smoking area, the aforementioned inconsiderate smokers will continue to go on as they were, and regardless as to whether another smoking area is added or facilities are improved, I doubt it'll have any impact on the inconsiderate folk, who will continue as they always have.

Chewing gum stuck under the desks is a problem. Chewing gum in class is not allowed. The problem remains. Pretty sure writing on the bathroom walls isn't allowed either. If there was a small area in class where you could chew gum, I doubt the amount under desks would decrease. Likewise with the writing. Straying off the point a bit there though I suppose.

I was serious about the super soaker remark too! :pac:

So shall the recruitment drive begin for a masked vigilante to police the smoking ban? Super-soakers provided

I think it is a great idea and was all for it when it was suggested at the student forum. It is really disgusting having to walk out of A block to be met by a cloud of smoke, as Konfusion pointed out, right at the doorway. I found this also happened, albeit to a lesser extent, outside the car park side door to C Block which is covered over. Although perhaps they should put another designated (rainproof?) shelter elsewhere on campus to help with the crowding issue or potential hazards of smokers spilling on to the road way.
