I am due to go back to work on Monday week after my maternity leave.

I emailed my boss to remind him i was due back then as he's away with the fairies and prob even forgot i worked there.

I got a reply from him basically saying he's been doing my job keeping stuff up to date. they are managing financilly day to day. things are slow. and the volume of work to do is not as much as in April. he said he would ring me that evening for a chat about it. that was two days ago.

    Where to i stand?
By law does my job not have to be there waiting for me as i left it?

Can he take me back for like a week then cut my hours?

I would say he has to give you notice of the fact that your job is no longer there if he wishes to let you go. This notice would start from your first day back or perhaps if not give you pay in stead of notice, depending on your contract this could be anywhere from a week to months. Check with Citizens Information though.
