so i know someone who is after an audi a3 as their first car.money wise they have had a job for a few years now saving up so thats the thing. theyre fairly sure this is the car for them and im thinking otherwise. they want an 02/03 diesel audi a3 and im not sure wheather it is a good idea so im asking your opinion, and if anybody has had one or still has how are they?
is it a moneypit or not? how is it petrol, tax, parts, servicing
    thanks

Relatively overvalued but hardly a moneypit. A 10 year old humdrum diesel hatchback powered by a 90s tech engine is hardly a daring purchase either way

If has a good steady job and can finance then an Audi A1 is only €240 a month, the new A3 has just launched too. If you are in the position to lease a car then it's the best option, new car every 36 months or else keep the one you have after the agreement ends.

Otherwise look for a post '08 A4, low tax and low maintanence cost as long as its been looked after, there's loads around that are ex hire/fleet. A 00/01 A3 is a poor choice IMO

Audi a3 , bit of a girlie car! Money would be better spent on a VW Golf, on which the A3 is based. The Golf may have a better resale value too.

How is a golf less girly than an A3?

Marginally, though in rural areas some of my farming neighbours buy the Golf for towing a cow box or horse box . Have yet to see a cow box being pulled by A3!

I had a 2010 A3 as a loan car from Audi for a couple of weeks and it was a great car, very nippy 1.6 Tdi. A golf is a gaa players car or a south side tossers car IMO. Common as muck.

If its a woman and it's her first car then an A1 would be perfect especially for city driving. Plus it has great styling
But then again I'm bias to audi :)

The A1 is for the retired spinster, The A3 for the girl about town.
Remember the A3 is simply a Golf in Girly clothes

I'd say it's the other way around, the A1 is a much more "fashionable" car than the A3, you can see a little blonde pr girl running around in an A1 and the 50 something spinster in an A3

Interesting point.let us be clear both are girl cars. The A1 is a Polo, and the A3 a golf

That only exists in your head, the cars are still cars.

Sorry the op is looking for a car for a girl. Simply confirmed which cars are for girls. Could also add Beetle, Peugeot 207cc. Apologies for causing offence to any guys who are driving any of the cars mentioned in the thread.

Objectively speaking, there's no such thing as a 'car for a girl'. Like I said, it only exists in your head.

Well I drive an 09 A3 Sportback and last time I checked I certainly wasn't a girl...and going back to OP's original question, if she can afford dit I'd recommend an A1, test drove one for my wife and they are recntly nice drive and interior is really top spec as well....waiting on new A3 Sportback myself so if she wants she can buy mine when I change ;)

What about the c180 coupe, BMW 316 hatchback? Surely no self respecting male would drive one of these girls cars?

Forget your audi, a nice BMW 318ci e46 with msport package will suit you down to the ground
