I have no insurance and no medical care. I was referred by my doctor to an consultant in Beaumont hospital, I've now been told i need to get an MRI and an operation. I worried about what all this will cost me. Can anyone advise

An operation, eh? That's fairly vague.

I had an mri in Beaumont about a year ago on the public health system. Didn't cost me a cent. Thank god I didn't need an operation.

You can still request to go public for the MRI even if you paid privately to meet the consultant. That's what I did.

In the public system your doctor's visits and tests etc. will be free. There is a charge of €75 per night to stay in a public hospital, this is capped at €750 per year. They will not look for money upfront and will allow you pay this bill off over a period of time.

ok, so you saw him as a public patient, then the only possible charge is 75 euros per night up to a maximum of 750 per year, however, I do believe that if you have a medical card this charge is waived.

This used to be common place, however over the last year public hospitals have tightened up on this.
