The likes of this is within my budget:

I suspect 5-6 year old Audis and BMWs are money pits, though - petrol, tax, parts, servicing will put me in the poorhouse.

Or do I have it wrong?

these costs apply to all cars, just the figures might not be as high, bear in mind you are paying the premium to drive a luxury car and not a tin can... what is your budget and max engine size?

I have had two Audis in the last 13 years and they have been fairly reliable

Bought a 1.8 A3 in '99 with 32k miles on it and sold it 7 years later with 152k on the clock. In the 7 years the main problem bar the usual servicing I had was a head gasket change which cost around €750.

6 years ago I bought a 1.9 diesel A4 with 52k miles on it. Still going strong with 180k on the clock. Had a few 'minor' problems in that time
    - New clutch, previous owner had it wore
    - Bearing on the alternator
    - New EGR valve €300
    - Goes through 2 suspension arms per year. I replace them with spurious versions which are about €40

I get an independant mechanic to do all the work and on average a service works out at around 200. Current car goes in evey 8-9k
