My gf just got back from UCD. She was told its a fortnight wait until she can use it. Assume that's due to the numbers starting.

Anyone hoping to start- get your butt down there. The harder we push, the faster we'll all get out of here :D

It's due to the numbers signing up and because they all have to book a time for an induction, so they cant go in, mess around with stuff, get injured and sue claiming that nobody ever told them what they shouldn't do in the gym.

so you can't just walk in next week and use it even if you're not a first year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

No one, whether they're a first year, private member or graduate can use the gym without being given an induction - it's no doubt an insurance/Health and safety thing. best to get down soon and make the appointment for as quickly as possible.

It's retarded / insurance wise makes sense, but I was there today for a gradutaion and thought I could take a look, but had to book an induction time a week from now, show up to that, sign a form, then get access a week after that....

I understand where they;re coming from, but at the same time...........ffffffffffffffffffffsssss...

Strange, I signed up in the middle of summer and I never got an induction. :pac:

Likewise, been using it all summer.
That being said, the induction is a very good idea as there is already a large number of people using machine's incorrectly and banging weights all over the place.

I also signed up during the summer, technically we were supposed to have an induction but the vast majority of people I know walked straight onto the gym floor and went about their business rather than wait for one.

The gym posers are going to be doing that regardless of induction or not

Anyway I joined during the summer and was never even told I needed an induction, was lucky I guess.

At least since people have to do all that, the novelty users may not be arsed filling out forms, waiting a few weeks and then getting an induction...

How has the gym been in terms of usage? Is it packed all day every day? This is my major fear. One because packed gyms are horrible anyway and you queue for things and then have people waiting around for you to finish and you need to take a break between reps etc., but also because I haven't been to the gym in years and am so out of shape I don't want a full audience to make me self concious when I'm wheezing like a drowning rat on the treadmill!

Had a look into the pool the other day and it looked very busy already, was a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.

Fantastic looking facility though, all in all.

Hasn't been too busy at all really, you'll never have to queue for the likes of a treadmill and I've never seen it overly busy. That being said, college isn't back till next week so will likely get a lot busier.

You can just show up to an induction. No matter what they say at reception, the induction demonstrators do not check you have been allocated to that time.
Just make sure you know when there is an induction scheduled.

Mine was scheduled for the 18th, did it on the 7th ;)

That's the tricky part. I only knew there was one on as it was my friends actual induction. This was Thursday 6pm.

I know there are inductions at 2pm, 5pm and 6pm on certain days. You'll have to ring to be sure, I doubt the weekly schedule changes.

    2 questions:

    1. what's the free weights section like?

    2. Will it be any bother to sign up mid-semester? I work out at home, but when it gets close to exams it'll be handy to pop in between study sessions.

    1. Non-existent, it's all cardio cardio CARDIO0O0O0! Seriously, the treadmill:rack ratio is through the roof, you'll lol when you see it

    2. There is no signing up you show up for an induction and some guy will show you the machines for 20 minutes, boom you're set.

Place will be absolutely packed until mid semester though so you've got that part right

Not that big considering the amount of potential users. The Gym contains: Two squat racks, 1 benchpress, 1 decline, 1 incline, 4 db benches, 2 sets of db's up to 50, a few bars, a few hammer strength machines, a sh*t load of cybex machines, and an enormous amount of cardio stuff...

To sum up it makes my eyes bleed the amount of cardio equipment they have compared to the ONE flat bench!

Anyone know what the induction times are at any stage next week? Also where do you meet for the induction? I was given a time today but to be honest I'd rather not have to wait 3 weeks before I can step foot in the gym, seems a bit much and I need to train during the week as it's squeeky bum time in the club championships over the next month (I don't fancy running the roads every day :( ).

I understand there are people who don't understand how to use machines despite the instructions being on the machine, but alas everyone has to do the induction. I'm assuming it's for insurance reasons but it's extremely unfortunate timing for me training wise. I'm tempted to turn up at 7am some morning and see if a gym instructor with a kind heart would just let me sign the form but having said that I don't fancy heading in for 7am and being turned away!

Can anyone who has an induction next week post their time and day please, i got my date and it's the week after next and then there's a week or so wait after induction. 3-4 weeks without a gym because of pedantics like this is ridiculous.

I don't get why there's an induction to the pool, whatever about the gym. I mean, it's water, I'm used to that, thanks.

Haven't heard of any induction for the pool, also don't think there is any wait once you've had your induction, your student card may not work but you will still have the piece of paper letting you use the gym? There's loads of cardio equipment as there is thousands of students and the gym is built to facilitate the majority of students not just all the meatheads, try use it yourself, I've never had to suffer any waiting times for equipments (cardio or freeweights).

The fact of the matter is that at the moment, the vast majority of the people using the gym at the moment are the "meatheads" as u call them
More students have a desire to use the freeweights than the cardio equipment at the moment and there simply is not enough space to facilitate this. I have used the gym a number of times since it opened and I have never seen more than six people on the treadmills. So your point is invalid.

For anyone who is curios, I am aware of inductions on Thursday and Friday, please pm me to find out when :D

There is no induction for the pool.

You must wait a week after induction to use facilities. Your card will not work.

One bench and two squat racks? Good god, thats actually shocking. Thats pretty much one squat rack away from a decent home gym set-up.

Anyone know if there's any kind of reduced entry into the pool if you join the swimming club?

Anyone know of a gym induction time today or tomorrow?

They gave me one the first week of Oct and would rather get it over with so thought I'd chance my arm at going to a random one.

You any idea how much it is for alumni? Seeing as I spent enough time paying a levy for it!
