Hybrid with disk brakes, recommendation...

    Hi pedal people.

I'm getting a bike for the daily commute, hopefully a relaunch of my love of cycling. I have NO idea what to get, but as I've been researching, I think Disk brakes are a must, and it has to be a hybrid.

So can anyone recommend a good hybrid with disks, in the €500-€750 bracket? The Felt QX75 looks like an option. The Escape and Sirrus series' both review well, but don't come with disk brakes.

    All advice much appreciated!

I have a Sirrus and am very very happy with it, got the Sirrus comp as it has the Armadillo tyres which are pretty much bullet proof. Never felt I was missing any breaking ability without the disc brakes.

I have a Boardman Hybrid Team and I'm delighted with it. I'm no lightweight and other than a faulty front mech on delivery it's a joy to use.

If you can see past the plonkers that Halfords are it's a great bike.

I had my hands on one on Monday! But then found out my company doesn't offer Bike2Work with Halfords. It's a fabulous bike...

Why are disc breaks a must? if it's just for the road then road or v breaks will be fine.

Discs add cost and weight with no benefit unless you are rolling through 4 inches of crap.

That's a really nice flat bar road bike, would be a lit nipper than the other bikes you've listed, it's as close to a road bike as you will get with flat bars and it's only 9.1kg with pedals.

Thanks Seaneh - probably right on the brakes, maybe that's a feature I can live without.

That Vitus is sweet, do you happen to know if there are any Ireland stockists?
Reason I ask, i'm trying to use the Bike 2 Work, and they only use certain stockists.

I'm loathe to go back after having a disc brake on the front of my hybrid - I've had the joy of brakes doing absolutely nothing because of wet and crap on the rims just from a commute in from Moycullen.

I'm going to be largely on good roads and cycle tracks, commuter stuff, so hopefully i'll only have to contend with ordinary weather...

sounds like you had rubbish brakes, pads or wheels (or all 3).
Proper decent rim brakes will be fine. Flat-bar road bike will be lighter and faster.

This is Ireland. The phrase 'ordinary weather' does not apply...

Well, ordinary for here! Otherwise known as rain, with some sleet, wind and blinding sun thrown in...

Maybe you need to just buy better pads?

Pad compounds can make a lot of difference.

Also, breaking surfaces on rims can be massive improvements.

Possibly, I went through most of the different types that were available in LBSs. Someone did suggest a german brand which was more resistant to wear and coped better with wet conditions but never got around to trying them. For me, as a commuter, the disc brake has just put and end to that and given me confidence in my braking ability.

have the dawes discovery 401 myself, not sure if its still available. Wasnt that expensive, think it came in at around €600. May be heavier than what you are wanting though

Obviously, want the lightest that makes sense. Not too many shops stocking Dawes. It looks like Giant, Trek, Felt or Specialised...
