Hi, I just installed a new graphtec Tusq nut on my epiphone lp - the original was the stock plastic crappy one. Anyhow, with the new nut the G string is "pinging" like crazy. Ive tried lubing the nut and adding graphite to the G slot plus checking the tightness of the tuner but its still pinging and also detunes fairly quickly. Tis driving me nuts, excuse pun! Any thoughts?

Have you actually strung the guitar properly? Check youtube for videos of how to do it. Lots of players fall into the trap - it´s not as easy as it seems.

    Ravelleman,
Yeh, its strung properly (have being restringing guitars for years) - just noticed that if i raise the G-String slightly with my hand just behind the nut that the pinging dissapears - that and the fact that its only since nut change that the pinging has occured. Was a pre-slotted nut by the way, ordered specifically to suit this guitar. At a loss here as to what to do next!

    I've made about 100 nuts.

off the shelf are close, but will always need work depending on your setup and fretwear.

    just sayin......

Was hoping that there would be no work involved with "made to order" nut but beginning to think your right Martin, maybe ill try build up the slot with baking soda and super - glue or if you have any better suggestions please share

you could raise the whole nut to see if that helps.

slip a thin strip of hard plastic underneath. credit card would be too thick....... maybe a slice out of a Fairy liquid bottle or similar...... just to see.
HEN you can try building up the slots.

Thanks Martin, actually tried putting a 2 business card cutouts underneath nut before i posted here but made no difference. Definitely seems that nut or slot needs to be raised but then another part of me wonders if its the width of the nut slot that needs widening but that sounds contradictory, anyhoo appreciate your help!
