Shires shower valve problem

O.K. lads. I fitted a shower pump for a friend of mine yesterday who moved into a rented house. The pressure on the gravity shower in the en suite was rubbish.

    It's a shires concelled valve:

First off does anyone know if this valve is thermostatic or not.

The problem is, when the pump is on there is not enough pressure on the cold and the hot is winning out, but when the pump is off it mixes no problem.
I know the pump is fine as I have equal pressures every where else.

The shower is not separately piped from the hot press.

It's showing the signs of a faulty thermostatic valve when the pump is running but yet is fine when it's not:confused:

    Any help is much appreciated.

P.s. Just noticed the pic is on it's side, ahh well.

it looks to me that is is one of those non thermostatic contractor mixers ..can you not take that plate off and see behind it for a closer inspection

:D:D:D. Take the plate off and see the lovely tiles the tiler went right up to the lever with.

From what I can make of it there is just 2 1/2 inch 316 into the body. I didn't think it was a thermo which has me even more confused as to why this problem is here.

I was thinking that maybe the pipe is damaged some what that it's restricting flow but it would happen also when the pump is off.

Its a manual shower. Take off the head on the wall just the bit at the end. Then see if the pump runs any better. If this is the case he just needs a new head. The heads on the manuals are sometimes restrictive on pumps.

Thanks Joey. I told him this the other day and he has not called since. Can spares still be got for this model?

You have a Shires Discus non thermostatic shower valve, it has no thermostat and no non return check valves, sorry to tell you its a junker worth about 60euro, imported and badged for Shires who are now gone out of buisness, be carefull with pumping a manual shower, if you have sny cold water issues you will scald someone quickly because of the pump, no parts available, ( I know because I worked for Shires)
