Hi guys just looking for a bit of advice . I'm unfit and overweight and am thinking of starting back to taekwondo . Just wondering should I join the gym first and loose some weight before I join a club , or just get back into taekwondo and loose my weight and get fit there ? did wtf for about year and a half a while back and really liked it . I'd be thinking of joining an itf club this time though . thanks for any replies

Screw it, back back into your Taekwon-Do. Join a club that will allow to train at your own pace until you're back fighting fit.

He's already made up his mind about which style to do. Answer the question asked, or don't bother posting.

If you try to get fit before you start, chances are you'll always feel you need to get that just that little bit more fit, and you'll end up putting TKD off for ever.

your cardio should come with TKD on-going training. My previous club was always great for that. Is this more a confidence aspect?

If you are starting as a beginner, you're not supposed to be able to do everything, even anything, perfectly. Senior students and instructors should make you feel comfortable.

Can't speak about ITF, i was always a WTF guy. :D. how come ya thinking of ITF? Just curious.

Ya could always go to both. Though, you're diet along with TKD may bring about all ya need!

    warmest wishes

    Wayne

I'd echo those saying just jump back into training. You can always do some running on the side to build cardio/drop kgs and training martial arts is way way more fun than the gym.

Get back into it, go at a pace that suits and enjoy it. You'll definitely feel anxious before the first class back regarding fitness levels but once you complete it you'll wonder why you considered going to the gym first.

    Hi,

I'm in a very similar position to the OP.

Trained in Taekwondo frequently for 5 years, but stopped about 4 years ago due to work and life issues. Now seriously overweight and hoping to get back into it! Not a fan of gyms and found I really enjoyed the motivational training style and varied exercises.

Does anyone know of a WTF class in Mayo? Or even Galway or Roscommon (I'd travel if need be!!). I'd much, much prefer WTF as that's the style I previously practiced and enjoyed.

    Thanks!!

In my experience, of the people who said "would love to do X martial art but want want to get fit first" are the ones who never end up coming to training.

I think people are worried about being embarrassed if they cannot keep up with the class or do all the exercises. But its the same for everyone.

In my opinion just start going. The sooner you go the sooner you will develop fitness and strength for your art. If you want later you can then supplement the training with some cardio or strength work on the side.

But if your serious about wanting to do TKWD again, just go and enjoy it!
