Ask for a reduction in notice period?

I've been in my job 2 years now and I don't have any plans to leave but in case I do, the notice period is 3 months. I'm not a manager or anything, is it a good idea to ask them to reduce it? How can I ask without making them think I'm planning to leave?

Ideally I would like a one month notice period but 2 months would at least be an improvement. Like if I interview for another place and say I need to give 3 months notice, surely I won't get the job.

For reasons that should be obvious don't ask your employer to reduce your notice period unless you are the best in your job by a considerable margin. You be better off asking for a massive pay increase. Notice periods frequently depend on the industry - if its standard in the industry you work that notice periods are that long then other companies will expect it. If its not I would say during the interview 'I will see if I can reduce this' and then speak to your employer.

Worst case scenario you could leave without giving the full notice period or use accrued holidays. Beware - some companies will take a very dim view of people not working notice periods - thats both sides the one you are leaving and the one you may be going to.
