It's quite a dramatic picture. This is a section of rail line near Lisburn which a train carrying around 100 passengers was heading towards in June. They were on a special service going to the Irish Open at Portrush. Were you on the train, or do you know anybody who was? BBC Newsline would like to hear from you. You can contact us using the message service on this page or at bbcnewsline@bbc.co.uk

    Details on the news tonight.

Its just a matter of time till this happens here with the cuts being made.

It's clearly a freak occurrence due to bad weather. There's only so much you can do to mitigate stuff like this and as there was no crash it seems effective enough to me. It occurred, was noticed quickly enough that no trains ran over it and have (presumably) since been fixed.

And it already has happened here of sorts with the Malahide bridge collapse

Jesus. Newsline has really gone downhill. No interviews. No nothing - just a bloke on a railway bridge.

Anyway, the section of line is the rarely used Knockmore branch. And I am not convinced they could do much about it. But they should have informed the RAIB of the full facts.

Prediction: RAIB says maintenance regime inadequate so more dosh required, Translink reply we're spending it all on the Derry Road, line closed.

Concerns have been raised about how details of an incident in which 100 rail passengers escaped injury on their way to the Irish Open was not reported to an investigation team for two months.

A Translink train between Belfast and Portrush ran onto a section of track where the foundation below had been washed away.

According to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), the driver was forced to apply the brakes but was unable to stop before the first of the six coaches had run onto the area of track, just outside Lisburn, on June 28.

It then came to a standstill immediately, did not derail and was reversed away.

But according to the RAIB, it only became aware that a train and its passengers had been involved in an incident towards the end of last month. It was first notified by Translink of the embankment subsidence on July 4 — but was not told the train carrying some 100 golf fans and five crew had driven over the track.

The train was working a special service, bound for the Irish Open golf tournament, over a line that is not normally used for passenger services.

The RAIB said its investigation into the incident will “identify the sequence of events that led to the wash-out and a passenger train running over it”. “It will also include a review of the maintenance regime for the section of line, the method of operation, and the immediate and longer term management of the incident and its aftermath,” it added.

The incident happened during the first day of the Irish Open at Royal Portrush.

Department of Enterprise efforts helped to bring the prestigious sporting event to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1953.

Deputy chair of Stormont’s enterprise committee, Phil Flanagan, said he was “very concerned” Translink had failed to disclose such key information to those investigating.

“This could have been a very serious incident and it’s a very concerning piece of information that they should have disclosed.

“Why wasn’t this information given to the RAIB?” asked the Sinn Fein MLA. “Translink must ensure this sort of thing is put right. In this case, during such a high-profile event, and given the efforts that were put in to attract the Irish Open, we are all grateful nothing happened, but they need to learn from this and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Last night a spokesman for Translink said it “reported an incident of embankment failure to RAIB in accordance with incident categorisation and reporting protocols established by RAIB”.

“Translink are reviewing the circumstances of the reporting of this rail incident and will fully co-operate with the RAIB investigation into this incident,” it said.
