    Hi all,

My dad has been given the choice between a Hyundai i40 saloon Executive model with the 1.7l diesel 115ps and an Insignia S model with plus pack which includes 17" alloys and fog lights I think which has a 2.0 diesel 130ps.

Tax, price and fuel consumption don't really matter as its a company car, thoughts?

I40 Saloon for sure. He might even be able to remap it to get the same power as the 130 engine in the Opel. Apparently the gearing and engine are quite rough in the Insignia and many have known issues.

Also the i40 looks unreal if he could get it in Black with 17's or something.

    I'd have the i40

Nice looking car those i40's. What's happened that's resulted in them making attractive looking cars all is a sudden?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The i40 Executive has alot more toys as standard than the Insignia S.

i40 for me as well. If it was an Insignia SC that might make me think twice, but the S model is a pretty grim place to be.

If it was me, it'd be the i40.

Been a passenger an an Insignia (can't remember which model, but it was an ex launch vehicle, so reasonably high spec) and wasn't too impressed. Very dark/ somber place to be.

The auld lad got an optima two seeks ago, and must say I'm very impressed with it. Haven't been in an i40, but from the pics I've seen, they're an even nicer place to be. Especially in Executive trim level.

I've a rental insgima for the last week.

I've done about 1000km in it. I've driven nicer cars. The gear changes can be rough

Had a rented 2012 i30 recently and was impressed by the package. I'd certainly have the i40 above the Insignia, especially with the god awful owner reviews I seen online.

What kind of spec would the i40 come with?

I've an Insignia Elite & like it tbh. Haven't had any of the issues that people have brought up here

However the S model is VERY basic. Never driven an i40 but if it's decent spec I can't imagine the S insignia would touch it

Easier to ask what it doesn't have I think.

Optima and i40 are pretty much the same car underneath.

Alan partridge drives an insignia in the new series

I wonder how much manufacturers pay him not to drive there cars?

People drooling over a Hyundai.. How times have changed. :D

I'm no fan of the Insignia either so I'd probably go for the i40 (if that was the only choice available).

    Orange pilled.

I think its pretty loaded as far as toys go afaik.

It doesn't have leather or sat nav but seems to have everything else offered, parking cameras and electric drivers seats, climate control etc. They dont have many levels it seems.

To be honest I wouldn't touch Hyundai's with a bargepole normally but thats just me. for some reason like some here I'd actually almost consider an i40, definitly not too bad looking.

The only thing that would put me off is the potential that the i40 could be underpowered with the 1.7 and only 113bhp. It's a big car and I would most likely chose it over the Insignia but you would really need a good drive in it to confirm if there is enough power. I have driven the 1.6tdci Mondeo and it's perfectly ok, so this is most likely the same but I would definitely test it on as many different types of roads as I could.

As an aside, anyone else blinded by the DRL's in i40's as they come towards them?

The only thing I dislike about the i40 is the standards alloys on them, don't know what size they are but they look lost in the arches. Upgrade to bigger wheels and it's a nice motor.

That 1.7 engine is a peach, Hyundai are doing some great diesels, my mothers yoke has a variable geometry turbo and you'd swear it was a 2.0 engine not a 1.6. The engine in the I40 is a twin turbo I think.

Hyundai... or Optima Platinum with 18s if your allowance streches that far!

    WHITE too.

We have a Sportage 1.7 with 115bhp, can't fault it - getting 5.3l all the time (mainly used for 15km school run).

I'd have the Kia over the Hyundai, I just can't get around all the lines on the i40

I40 but I am not very keen on the saloon allthough the pic above with upgraded allots looks great. I think the estate looks great though..

I know that alright Bazz. I was hoping the o/p did as well, so was giving my experience of a car as close to the i40, that I had been in.

Edit: getting in before the grammar Nazis.

The veloster has some lovely details, the new i30 is easily good as the best in class, the ix20 is definitely worth considering, this is the turning point for Hyundai, from making cortinas under license to having a raft of models to rival the biggest car companies in such a short time

Something to consider on the I40 if you want upgraded wheels, the bigger wheels can take up to 6 weeks extra from the factory and will push the car into a higher VRT bracket due to an increase in CO2.

Stop dragging up old threads to warn people off this car. Once is enough.
