    Hi All,

I've been recently looking into getting back with again after sustaining an injury. And I'm interested in Martial Arts & Self Defence. I'm wondering could anyone recommend what to start in as a beginner? I can throw the odd punch but other then that nothing major. So It really would be a beginners course.

    All help appreciated

Sorry, suppose I should of said that.

I'm living in Dublin 7, just outside City Centre! So I'd be able to travel to most areas by bus or luas

What type of style do you think you'd be interested in? Striking (punching, kicking etc) or more Grappling (throws, chokes, joint locks etc)... or maybe a bit of both?

Bridgestone Muay Thai are in Dublin 7, just off Arbor hill anyway if you're looking for striking and they have a seperate beginner class so you're not getting chucked in the deep end.

Best of luck whichever style you choose!

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'd probably be more interested in Striking. I'm only weighing in at 58KG so can't see me being very good at Grappling?

    Hi

We have Silat Classes on a Thursday night in Sheldon Park Leisure Club. It just right beside the Kylemore Luas stop. The classes covers all ranges, but the great thing about silat it blends to each person natural ability. So no two students are exactly the same. You can progress at your own rate and all the Sheldon classes are geared towards the self defence core aspects of silat. All classes are taught in a informal fun way, so you get the most from the training. If you like more detail please feel free to PM or check out any of the links below. Good luck with your search.

Ah I've always thought Grappling vs Striking more down to personal preferance than weight. Anyway for Striking I'd reccomend Muay Thai, I fight from 58-60kg too and I find it great.

    Best of luck

All combat sports will be broken down by weight, so whatever weight you are, you'll be going against something similar.

To be skilled at Martial arts/Self Defence , as a general rule takes a few years training a few times a week with good instructors. BUT there are so many martial arts out there and lots of ways to train with varying focuses and claims.

So the best you can do is:

    - Pick a few arts, maybe 5 of them
    - Find 2 or more clubs in each art and visit them
    - Out of the 10 or so visits you made, pick say 3 or 4 to do for about a month each
    - Base your choice on the effort you've put in researching.

Believe me its worth it for a pastime, hobby, sport you're probably going to do for a long time.

Having said that, my teachers running a beginners course soon.. www.happobiken.com harolds cross
