    Hi,
i am from Hong Kong and i have a Bachelor degree in science completed in Ulster few years ago. Following that i've completed a postgraduate degree in Hong Kong and working full-time for about 2 years. I would like to work abroad in Ireland and how could I get a work permit for a Hong Kong resident? what should i do? is it easy to get a science background job in Ireland?

Are you Hong Kong resident with a Chinese passport, or do you have a UK passport?

It would make all the difference when trying to work here. As a UK Citizen (NOT British Subject) you have the right to work and live here. If you have a Chinese passport, then you'll need sponsorship from your employer and a work permit. Work Permits are not at all easy to get right now as the economic situation is so bad, as I'm sure you're aware.

    Hi ABajanin,

    thanks for your reply.
i have a British Nation (overseas) (aka BNO) passport so i'm a bit confused. does this count as the same as an EU citizen?

Hi - think your passport says you're a British Subject which is not the same as a British Citizen unfortunately. If you're coming over to the Republic, then I think it would be more difficult for you. I'm nearly certain you'll need a WP/visa.

Are you planning to look for work in the North or here in the South? If it's the North, then I think the rules are different. Either way, you're better off checking with the British Embassy here in Dublin or the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,
do u mean there's no difference either i hold a BNO or a Hong Kong resident passport if i'm coming to the south?

    Hi,

No. I meant that holding a BNO passport will probably make a difference if you're coming to the South. If you hold a BNO passport it means you're a British Subject as opposed to a British Citizen.

If you hold a British Passport which shows you're a British Citizen, then you have the right to live and work in the South as you're also an EU Citizen. You therefore do not need a WP or visa.

If your passport shows you're a British Subject then like I say I'm nearly sure you need WP/visa. You really need to check your status with the British Embassy in Dublin or the FCO if you're planning to return to Ulster.

Excuse the bolded bits, but I wanted to clarify for you as best I could.
