Engine Sounds Like Tin Cans Banging Together

My brothers car which is an automatic mitsubishi mirage 1998 has a problem which sounds like tin cans banging together from the engine, but if he leaves the engine off for a while say 40 minutes and turns it back on you can't hear the banging but after around 10 minutes you can hear it clanging like tin cans banging together.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea on the cause of this and would it be dangerous if he still drives it as he has to drive it for work and no buses run at the times he has to go to work so he needs it badly.

Also would you be able to advise me on a good reasonably priced mechanic in the rivervalley swords area that would be able to look at it today ? thanks.

That's a bit difficult, some more information would be useful: are the "bangs" regular? and most importantly, what is their frequency ? Are they quick such as "tintintintintin" or does one happen every second or so?).

It could be something minor like a covering coming loose and hitting somewhere (I had an exhaust manifold cover coming loose on a previous car, and it sounded more or less like somebody had left a tin can in the engine compartment); However, the fact that it seems to come alive when the engine warms up should be very worrysome - metal expands as it warms up, if something in the engine is even slightly out of phase or alignment, it will end up banging on something else.

For your brother's sake I hope it's not a valve hitting something, or a misaligned or broken crank - does the engine feel underpowered when compared to the past?

Did you check engine oil level ?

How long ago/ How many miles ago has oil been changed?

Do you know if it has a timing belt or chain ?

when the car heats up the noise is loud and can be heard from inside the car while driving also the noise is every second or so. it's not a continuous tintintin just every second. when he had the bonett up and i was listening to it my eyes firstly went to the manifold cover in the front as that sounded where the noise was coming from.

he said earlier on that he didn't change the oil in over a year and has not got it serviced either in this time, his oil is a bit light brown looking and i did tell him to get it changed over a month ago but he never got around to it.

it has a timing belt, no chain but his own mechanic is away for a few weeks so he can't get it checked. I know little to nothing about car engines or mechanics and neither does my brother.

Being honest, I don't think anyone here could begin to diagnose the problem based on the description of a sound. He really needs to get a mechanic to look at it sooner rather than later.

Well even though the both of us are not any good at mechanics we found the problem.

The rattling sound was definitely heard from the manifold cover but the problem was the exhaust itself under the manifold. there was a bracket that came lose and the bracket slid down out of place so we used a bit of WD 40 on the nuts and slid the bracket back up to it's original position and bolted it tight and it fixed the problem. Lucky for him it was an easy fix. Driving over all the speed bumps over time obviously made the bracket come lose and fall down so happy days all fixed now and no clanging.

Thanks all for the replies and especially thanks to H3llR4iser for bringing the manifold cover comment up as it made us look closely at this part and check it all out.

No problem, amazing it was the actual issue - but you know those "hunches", when I read your message I thought "this sounds exactly like the noise my 155 did some time ago" :)
