eBay buyer hinting at damaged item...what to do?

Last week I sold a fairly expensive PC gaming rig on eBay that was received by the buyer today.

I got an email from the buyer this morning saying thanks for the delivery, "however it was advertised as perfect condition, yet has a chip on the lettering".

I presume he means the plastic lettered branding on the case has been chipped.

I know 100% that this was not chipped when I sent it, and was in the condition as show in the photos that were in the ad. I can only presume it was chipped in transit (An Post Registered International) or by him upon receiving it.

I'd just like to know what people would do here. I can't give this guy any hint of a partial refund or full return! The money I got from this sale has been used already and I'm fairly broke. The shipping was a bit of a nightmare and I really don't want to have to go through any kind of return.

I'm really worried he's looking for some kind of excuse to return the item. Should I reply to him just stating the items were shipped as per the photos? Apologise but tell him it's nothing to do with me? Ignore him completely?

It is his word againts yours I'm afraid .

Personally speaking from what I heard it's almost impossible to win Paypal dispute againts the buyer.

Do not ignore the buyer,give him a true and reasonable reason what happened to this item .

I assume that the package was properly insured ?

I assume you have used tracked delivery and you can go on and show that he received the item. If he does dispute it as a 'not as described', he will be asked to return the item by tracked means and you will refund minus the original postage

Ask him for a photo of the item to compare against your listing photo.

Thanks guys, seems to have turned out ok in the end, I explained that the item was 100% undamaged when packaged, and that the pics on the ad were taken literally days ago, showing no damage.

Still, bit of an worrying experience, I don't know what I would have done if I had to refund.

Probably best not to spend the money until the item has at least been recieved. Glad it worked out ok.
