    Folks, is there any time limit for transferring your handicap from one club to the next? For example I leave a club on 1 October, when do I need to join another club I order to bring my handicap with me? Is there a set time as designated by the GUI or is it at discretion of your new club?

    I think it's within 6 months.

    It has to be within 6 months or your handicap will lapse.

    I presume the OP has got his answer so a slightly different question on the same issue if that's okay;

    Just wondering what sort of handicaps people have got when reapplying after the six month lapse.

    I ask this because I may find myself in this situation in 2014. Thinking of letting membership lapse for 2013. Suppose it depends on the three cards I hand in in 2014 (which could be at a different club) but just wondering what previous experiences have been. i.e. would a, say, 5 handicapper often come back as a 7 or an 8? I doubt any handicap secretary would chance going higher than that. At the same time you'd want a shot or two back if you'd been off competitive golf for a year.

    Afaik when you leave a golf club and are not a member of any other affiliated club your handicap lapses. You can have your handicap re-instated if you join a club within 6 months.

    24.7 A player’s handicap is lost immediately he ceases to be a Member of an affiliated Club or loses his amateur status.

    26. If the handicap of a player is to be restored within six months of the date on which his handicap was lost, or suspended, it must be reinstated at the same handicap the player last held. In all other cases
    the player shall be allotted a new handicap after he has complied with the requirements of Clause 6.

    26.2 When restoring a handicap which has been lost or suspended for more than six months the Handicap Committee, in addition to proceeding as required by Clause 6,must give due and full consideration
    to the handicap the player last held. A Category handicap must not be allotted without the approval of the Union or Area Authority if so delegated.
    In Ireland, delegated to the Provincial Council/District Executives.

    Handicaps can be regained if another club is joined within 6 months.

    Different Unions apply different rules in relation to active/inactive (England) and lapsed (Starred) in Scotland.

    My handicap was 16 when I played a lot a few years back, I was out of the game for 6 years and when getting a new handicap they completely ignored my old handicap and went off the three cards, I got 18 and am averaging just under 34points a round since so the 18 is fair enough I think.
