    Hello :)

I have been approved for BTEA and will be receiving my 1st payment this week (although i think its actually Jobseekers allowance). When i register for college i must present the letter of confirmation to the very kind lady that looks after BTEA at my local social welfare office by early October. My problem is, i wont be able to pay the Student Contribution Charge until about late October-November but have been reliably informed that the college will be accommodating as i have the majority of the €2250. I wont be officially registered with the college if i have not paid the full charge. The full charge will not be paid until after the deadline the Welfare office have sent to me.

Does anybody know anything about this or any advice would be most welcome.

    Thank you for reading

    Mr Hillman

The official position, as far as I understand it, is that people on the BTEA should be exempt from the Student Contribution charge.

Please see attached link from citizensinformation.ie, which repeats the text from student finance.ie:

Irrespective of what the college or university are telling you, can I suggest that you check with the Higher Education Authority. I understand that you fill in the grant application form and while you won't get the grant, you should get a waiver on the student contribution.

Yes you can get a grant to pay the student contribution. The deadline for applications was supposed to be 31st August. I haven't heard if this is still being strictly upheld. Apply at

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I dont think i am eligible for the grant and i am unable to get all the paper work and information required if i were. I followed Sharpsuits advice and finished off the application earlier today just to give me some time. I had it mostly completed but was unable to answer a lot of questions. When they ask for the documentation, i will tell them i an unable to provide this and deal with my application accordingly, hopefully after registration day ;)

If you can't provide the documentation you won't get a grant.
