Used to work for Ladbrokes for about 6 years.

The work is reasonably good, but depending on your supervisor or manager, it can be very robotic.

In general, it helps to have an interest in horse racing (main gambling events everyday), as well as some other sports, such as rugby, football, GAA, greyhounds, etc. This will allow you to interact better with the customers, and gives you an understanding of what is going on.

You should also have an understanding of how to calculate to winnings (e.g €10 at 4/1 returns €50, while €10 at 1/4 returns €12.50). It means that customers won't try and cheat you. Some days can be very busy, especially Cheltenham, Grand National days and Galway/Glorious Goodwood.

I should point out that there is little room for advancement. You can go from a cashier to a shop manager in about 5 years, but it is very difficult to break into the supervisor or head office ranks.

Overall, a good place to work, in general, but it will depend on the shop, the supervisor and the staff you are working with (like any other company).

    Hi Clauric,
Thanks for your reply. Can I ask you what was the pay like when you were in Ladbrooks - did you get a basic pay with bonus depending on how you/ your branch or company were doing?
    What pay were you on?
What hours did you work in an normal week? Did you do extra hours during the busy racing times ie Cheltenham, Grand National days and Galway/Glorious Goodwood?
Could I ask why did you leave Ladbrokes - did you get a better job with another bookies or a job in a different company?
    Thanks for you help.

If you were applying for a job would you not like to know the hours, the salary or any general company information.
    Thanks Clauric for help.

Hi, I worked with them for two years finished about a year ago, hours if you get a full contract which they don't give out is 37.5hrs a week don't pay for lunch brakes(paddy power those) so you work week is 42.5 really. You'll more than likely be taken on a contract of 7hrs plus(up to 37.5) and it'll be all the shttiy hrs you'll be given eg 6-930 long shift sat and sun( on sun you get I think an extra €3.5 for the day working!!!)
Wages are around €9.10hr, you'll work 37.5 mon to sat or 30hrs mon to sat plus a sun 7.5.
If shop did good in year you were suppose to get a bonus but that doesn't happen ....
You have to be logged in by 9.30am every morning if your late it's deducted from your wages! There's a lot of back stabbing and trying to better each other in the shops( not all).
From jan2013 evening racing will be on thurs fri and sat every week.
I left because I got a job in paddy powers and I've got to say there 100% better company in every way.

Thanks for you post Tipperary animal lover. The job I have seen is offering 25 hours a week over 5 days so I now know that I would be working the ****ty shifts. I don't want to be working late Thur, Fri and Sat or long days every weekend which is what would happen.
It is good to know what I would be signing up for but from what you have told me the hours are not good for me.
    Thanks for your help.
