Not Paying Fees on time?

    Hi everyone,

So I started in UCD today in first year Arts. I'm still in the registration process, and haven't paid the fees yet, for the simple reason that I don't have the money at the moment. My parents have applied for a loan, but they won't get it until at least next Tuesday the 11th. According to the UCD website, I'm supposed to have paid up by the 9th of Septbember. I'm obviously feeling a little bit anxious about this, so I'm wondering if anyone else has ever paid the fees late before and what that meant for them? My biggest fear is that they'll impose late charges, which I won't be able to afford at all. Does anyone have any advice? Should I talk to the college and explain my situation to them? Are they really that strict that they have a problem with people paying a few days late?

You don't have to pay the whole thing, just half on the 9th. AFAIK there are no late charges.
There is a section at the bottom here about the consequences, which are mainly about not getting your UCARD and not being able to do exams.

They don't mind. I paid mine near the end of September last year.

Thanks very much both of you! That puts me at ease a lot. I don't mind not getting my Ucard until next week - well I have no other choice :P But yeah, that's great news. I was terrified that I would have to pay extra.

I've never found UCD to be strict about late payment really. People didn't have library access cut off until November I think last year. They might be a little more strict this year because you can give them your grant application number if you are waiting on one. That means they know that anyone else who is late isn't late because they are waiting to hear about the grant. At the very worst you wont get your UCard until you pay half the fees, and wont be able to get into the library etc. without it. There are no late charges or anything like that. Also if you found you really need your UCard while your parents are waiting to hear about the loan, speak to your student advisor or someone, they might be able to help you out while your waiting. They can be very understanding in genuine cases where you're stuck for whatever reason. Don't worry yourself over it anyway, shouldn't really affect you too much.

Thanks very much @Muir! I really appreciate the response. I feel calmer about it now, I'm supposed to collect my UCard tomorrow, I'll give it a go but at least I know that even if they won't give it to me, I should have the fees paid by next week and I'll get it then. Thanks again!

Me either, but it sounds like UCD will be more strict this year in regards of not giving people UCards, stopping library access etc. unless you're waiting to hear about the grant. I could be wrong, but it's sounding like they will be clamping down a little more.

i wouldn't worry about it, i paid my fees in late october one year, well over the dead line where they will throw on extra fees but i never had to pay the late fee for some reason

That's because there is no late fee in UCD. It does sound like they will be more strict this year in regards not issuing UCards or restricting library access etc. There was already a hold showing on my account before today, even though today is the deadline. Never seen that happen before until much later in the year.

Can they block individual UCards from library access?

Yeah, that's what they do. It says in the link you posted earlier that your UCard wont be re-validated for this year until you pay so it's possible you wont even be able to use it for printing etc. but I don't know for sure. But they definitely can & have blocked library access in the past two years on individual student cards (although not til later in the year).

So they may not have them blocked until later in the year? Just seems like a lot of trouble to monitor it but either they have a system in place or a disaster is in the making.

It's normally done later in the year, but the hold is on my account already so apparently it's immediate this year. I think it's an automatic system so it doesn't need to be monitored really. Seems colleges are becoming more strict this year on having fees paid upfront.
