Looking for a cloud backup solution & came across Amazon Glacier. Seems like a good price. Anyone any opinions on it - good or bad ?

    Anything better out there ?

I haven't used it but they seem to want to charge you for everything, could you not use Dropbox or Sky Drive.

Right, it seems decent but they charge you everytime you access the data. It could work out costly unless you just want to leave it there for good.

Its going to cost roughly €2 per month but if you want to get your data back it will cost you €24 each time you download it.

I heard about this on the excellent podcast "Security Now".

They recommended it if you wanted to store a lot of data cheaply and weren't too concerned about getting it back immediately.
Apparently there could be a 3-5 hour delay before accessing your data for download.
As if they had a slow robotic server plugging in hard drives, or worse a human physically plugging in drives upon request!

But if you wanted to dump a serious amount of data on there and leave it for an extended amount of time, eg. backups of photos/data, it sounded like a good cost to functionality compromise.

The guy from Security Now, Steve Gibson, knows his stuff and I respect his opinion.

It's photos, home movies & documents that are most important. Music would be important be important but not AS important.

I've roughly worked out that the hosting charge would be less than €1 per month, but it could cost me about €30 if I needed to get stuff back (which would only be in a disaster scenario)

    Would I be right ?

I saw that but to me it seems primarily designed for archiving or for data that's very infrequently accessed.

Or just get two small externals and feck the cloud.
