I'm going to put my '02 laguna through the nct, the problem is that both front window regulators are gone. Will they check the windows or not?

They will afaik and if the windows won't open it's a fail, particularly the drivers side window

You might get lucky. I had my Passat booked in. Literally a day or two before the NCT the drivers window regulator went.
I said i'd chance it and looked at him carrying out most of the test. He never checked the window and passed with flying colours!! I was lucky though :D

The drivers window has to work for the NCT.

That's rotten. How does that affect mine or other drivers' safety? Now I will have to shell out 180 to get them sorted:(

I think it's to do with being able to signal to other drivers if you needed to?
You'd have to be able to open the window to do so?

You mean sticking the middle finger out through the window? ;) The indicators/lights work just grand, thank you very much.

You can't do the hand signals you learned for your driving test with the window up.

    From the NCT manual
    Reason for failure
Opening mechanism of driver’s window not operating.

Now this could be interpreted as saying that the window needs to open but doesn't need to close. In that case, if you go for your NCT with the window stuck in the open position will the car pass?

Would likely fail under the "condition and security" clause for windows in that case.

I think you need to prove that it opens, as opposed to simply having opened at some time in the past.

What signals are we talking about here? I'm genuinely interested. I've done my test in Poland over 20 years ago and am pretty sure they didn't mention any back then. I will have to go through the RSA book again so.

So, she'll pass the test once the driver's side window works?

I don't agree, I think the the condition of a side window and whether it opens or not is irrelevant if it's missing or already stuck in the down position and not inspectable. Security would refer to whether the window is likely to come loose, fall out etc.

Manual says that you need a windscreen but I don't think you need side windows to pass the test.

The more I think about this the more sure I am that the OP could pass his NCT with the driver window jammed securely in the down position, then jam it closed once the test is finished. Not that I'd recommend this course of action.

These ones here. About 2 months ago I followed an E30 BMW from Sandyford to Milltown in Dublin and he used hand signals, no lights working on the car! So some people still use them. ;)

That rings some bells alright. God, I'm getting old...

That begs the question though, why would a car with no lights/indicators be allowed on the roads. Surely the very first garda car would stop him and issued a hefty ticket, no?

I cannot see you winning that argument with any NCT test centre in the country, or the AA (who do the dispute resolutions).

My colt passed last year with the drivers window jammed open. The regulator had broken. It was a nice day anyway (shock) so it didn't look odd. I don't know if he attempted to close the window. We thought jammed open would be better than jammed closed so we took the chance.

    1. When do you ever see a Garda car.
    2. When do you ever see a Garda car pulling someone in.
    3. When do you ever see a Garda car pulling someone in and issuing them with a ticket?

Not sure if hand signals are allowed for short journeys, by law you need brake lights and indicators where fitted.

To be fair he pulled into BMW in Milltown, the car was actually in mint condition, had a 1988 original Irish number, I think I posted a pic of it on the classic forum.

Are you in any way electrically minded you could take the regulator if it is that but I bet it's the actual rotor in the motor that's gone and needs to be relaminated.

Either way it's a handy enough job I've a Renault myself and it's a common fault that Renault will charge you a nice figure to fix i think the last time i heard someone paying to get it fixed it cost them €300.

Definitely a fail though drivers side window must operate properly.

Well, the motors on both sides seem to work properly, I think it's rather the cable that's gone. Micksgarage sell the regulators for €89 if I remember correctly. I've gotten a quote from a local indy for €175 for one window  , so I'd rather do it myself.
Here is a good thread on how to replace the regulator: http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=22260

you gotta love Renault shame they didn't spend a bit more time putting them together properly
