Negative PAYE on payslip?

For the last few weeks my payslip from work has been showing my PAYE payment as a negative figure. ie -160.00.

It has remained at the same figure for the last few weeks.

Would this mean I am due back the negative amount? Or do I owe that amount?

    Regards

You are probably due nothing and you owe nothing provided your employer is doing the calculations correctly. Were you overcharged Paye earlier in the year? Or were your tax credits increased recently? This would result in you having to pay less tax overall for the year and as a result your employer is correcting the figures each week.

It is hard to say exactly what the reason is without knowing the figures and possibly some figures from previous payslips but if you feel you have over paid Paye at the end of the year you can order a P21 balancing statement to ensure that tax were calculated correctly.

Thanks for the reply. Yup when I changed to my current job a few months ago my tax credits were messed up for a few weeks and was severely over taxed a few times. So this is probably the reason why it's showing negative :o

You need to figure out what's going on here, it's kinda important!

If your payslip shows negative tax you should be getting a refund, and your take home pay should be higher as a result. If your take home pay hasn't gone up substantially then you need to be asking questions of your employer.

I havn't paid PAYE for a good few weeks now and working full time, so could it be that my employer just isn't taxing me for a period until it get's to a point where I should start paying paye again? Ie instead of a lump sum refund, they just dont tax me for a few weeks?

Do you know roughly how much you were overtaxed and if so how close are you to getting it back over the last few weeks where your payslip has had negative Paye. I would expect that this will stop shortly and that you will have a Paye charge so be prepared for a drop in your weekly take home pay.

As above, there are many possible reasons for this to arise.

In general, negative PAYE might occur if your earnings in the earlier part of the year were higher than they are now. For example, if you were earning €3000 per month for the first 8 months but then (say due to a reduction in hours/ 3 day week) were reduced to €2000 per month from September, your employer would be able to refund you some overpaid PAYE in September-November.

It's also possible that your tax credits were significantly increased recently.

You can download my spreadsheet [best version is 2007 format] by clicking the link in my signature below (also accessible in the 'About me' section of my profile page) to see how it might have arisen.
