Moving house, how to protect bicycles

I'm moving back to the continent at the end of the month and I have 4 bicycles that will be shipped by the moving company.
Does anyone have an idea on how to best protect bicycles during shipping?

If you're really paranoid, get some boxes from a bike shop. Shouldn't cost anything.

    Then do this:

Why leave the wheels out? Surely box them like you would taking them on an airplane. Any moving company worth its salt will treat fragile and suitably marked items with care?

    Excellent.
    The wheel idea.

The last time I was moving bikes I used pipe insulation on the tubing (including the fork blades) turned the handlebars into the crossbar, took off the pedals and everything was fine, If you're using professional movers they will take good care of y our stuff anyway.

Surely it's the moving company's job to package all items (including bikes) in such a way as to ensure they reach the destination safely... otherwise they have to compensate you for the loss.
Ask them first before going to the trouble of bike boxes etc. because I suspect that anything that is not packed by them is not covered by any insurance you take out.

Hi Mp31, we have opted to pack things ourselves. It just makes more sense then having some guy wrapping up every little cup and plate. Insurance is covered, that is, if you can show that the mover dropped the box and it is not an error in packing.

The items are placed on a pallet and schrinkwrapped than loaded into a container that is moved to the continent. As long as you make sure vibraitons and shocks can't hurt it it should be fine. It is not like flying where they just shove things in an airplane.

I've just sold my car so itmight be a bit difficult to get the large boxes home. The pipe insulation idea is a nice one too.

Just a quick question to Lumen, why didn't you take of the front wheels and put them in a seperate box, or to the side of the bike in the box. Would seem more compact to me?
