I have a cousin going to Shanghai in a few weeks and was wondering if it would be a good idea for him to get me some Canon equipement eg. Lens, while he is out there.

Does anyone have any experience buying from there and if so, can you recommend some where reputable.

The best place to go is Xing Guang camera market, The art of haggling would need to be perfected.
This mall has all you need under one roof head for the cheaper shops which will be on the top floors, they all sell the genuine goods.
I would do a lot of research before going, I noticed that the prices rose steeply after the earthquake in Japan. It was cheaper for me to buy my 100-400 of Kerso in Scotland than in China, in saying that the stock levels for all equipment, canon or nikon coming in from Japan was historically low. Before the quake you could save 30% - 50% on lens.

    The best buys.
    filters
    Batteries
    Memory (amazingly cheap).
    remote switches.
Lens cloths (free they will give you a sack full if you wanted.)

In the main shopping area there are a couple of malls with big canon and other computer manufacturers logos outside. These are aimed towards the tourists and price as such.

One other tip go shopping after 3pm as the better deals can be obtained from the shop that needs to get its figures up before closing.

The best bit of advice for shopping in Shanghai I received was to befriend a local chinese lady and let her do the haggling.
