    Hi,

I just had a motor check report done on a vehicle Im thinking of buying from a dealer (non simi) and it turned up a few alerts. Dont know too much about cars so any clarification would be great!

The number of owners was advertised as 2, yet the report states 4 (incl current owner). The dates of sale given are
    04/07/2011
    13/10/2010
    08/10/2010
    08/07/2009
    22/05/2008
    25/04/2008

Is this anything to worry about?

Also the tax is valid for the next 3 weeks but there has been a gap noticed in the taxation dates. Previous expiry dates are
    30/09/2011
    30/04/2010
    30/04/2009
    30/04/2008

Another concern was that the report states it could have been recalled. how do I investigate further? just call the dealer?

There was a 36mth warranty which has now expired.

Any tips/advise are most welcome! Dont wanna buy a dud!

Hi there. First off - thanks for using Motorcheck. It's greatly appreciated!

    To answer your questions -

The dates of sale indicate the dates that the vehicle was assigned to a previous keeper. In the case of a new owner the logbook has an additional owner added. Garages, whilst recording a date of sale do not add an owner to the logbook. In your case it looks like there were two garages that had it in their names.

This might answer the second question regarding the tax dates. Garages don't tend to tax the cars they have on their forecourt so it's quite common to see gaps in the previous dates.

As with every used car purchase we recommend that you have its mechanical condition checked out by an expert. Also make sure you're getting a proper warranty with the car and ask all the pertinent questions prior to purchase. Eg. Has the car ever been involved in an accident? Is the mileage currently displayed warranted by the seller?

Best of luck with the purchase!

At a guess the number of owners could have been down to someone buying the car and registering it in their own name, then selling it on. I know dealers can do this without having it affect the number of owners (its not an official change of ownership as such) but Im not sure if it still shows up on Motorcheck, and Im not sure if smaller dealers operate like this.

The gap in the tax could be someone who chanced their arm with an RF100 form...

Someone else will probably be able to give better insight though.

Thanks for the advise guys. Have researched the dealers and nothing negative turned up so hoping all is ok.

Will mention my queries when I view the car and see what's said.

Also noted that a motorcheck was carried out on vehicle day before I carried out mine so looks like I might have some competition anyway!!

I had a similar experience when i was down to having it between 2 cars when i was buying, one of them looked clocked but it wasn't and it also looked like it had 5 previous owners but actually only 2 as 3 were garages.

Either car would have been fine but i went for lower milage over spec
