You are allowed a break of journey which can include an overnight stay(return intercity tickets only) but you must continue your journey on the first available service the next day.

Yes you can buy student tickets, when you pick your train times it shows the adult price below and shows other ticket types, this has a student option so you add one passenger to the student option and change the adult ticket from 1 to zero.

Yes as that would be the first available service allowing you to continue your journey.

8.2 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an return ticket may break his or her journey at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid, provided the journey is completed within the same calendar day, except where the timetable does not permit, in which latter case the journey must be completed on the next available service.

Hi, does that mean that my trip from Tralee to Chareleville would have to be the last available service that day.

    Yes.

What it means is that you must complete your journey in the same calendar day except where the timetable does not allow this, so if you get off one service and there is a later train you should continue on that service but if the service you take your break on is the last of the day you are allowed an overnight stay(return tickets only!) but you must continue your journey at the first available opportunity the next day which would be the first train.
