    Hey All,
The timer for my central heating is gone on the fritz. Basically the heating will come on when its meant to but it doesn't shut off. I have one of these push pin timers (don't know the technical term for it). I have two questions, well three,

    1. Are these easy to replace, I'm fairly handy so if its not too bad I'm sure I could put a new one in. Or do I need an electrician or plumber to fit it?

    2. As I said I just a simple pin system for setting the time for the heating to come on and off, I would prefer to get a digital one that I could set different times for different days of the week, but am I stuck with the type of timer that came with the house, (I have a Sime system format boiler if that helps)

    3. Any guesstimate on how much this would cost to get replaced?

    Thanks all in advance

    J

Timers are €50 approx, buy a like-for-like and pretty easy to replace, just make sure to isolate all power first at the fuse board.

If I was doing it, I would normally suggest to the customer that we service the boiler, then only charge for the part, no fitting cost (only takes 10 minutes)

But can be DIY as long as it is NOT part of the boiler, ie, separate on the wall. (we call them mechanical clocks, the 'bit you push in' are called tappets)

Right well the timer seams to have kicked the bucket all together. So no heating / hot water for me.

I might get a plumber out anyway as I have two rads that are not heating (I have tried bleeding and balancing the system ,tho I'm not sure I did it right).

So anybody recommend a plumber in Finglas or North Dublin?

You shouldn't go wrong with JohnnieK. Send him a PM.

Would a Horstmann CentaurPlus C17 timer be ok with my boiler?

I'm not 100% what the difference between single channel or multi channel is.

If your heating system is zoned in that you can turn on different parts of the heating system such as hot water or heating to rads only, then you will require a multi-channel time clock with the corresponding number of channels to the number of zones. Otherwise a single channel is the correct option if everything comes on the boiler fires.

Change it for a proper digital timer... something like the c11. 3on and off periods, boost button for 1hour of heating-very handy and easy to use aswell. That would be my opinion... don't like the immersion type clock used as a heating clock.

No, use the C17 rather than the C11

C11, allows you to set up one day (3 on-off's) and everyday is the same!
C17, is as above, but you can set up all 7 days with different time demands as required (as in, during the week you may was heat morning and evening, but at the weekends you may want it a different times)

In my experience most people just about get how to use a 24hrs with 3 timers nevermind 7 days or 5/2 function. A c11/24hr clock will suit most people. I'd only fit a 7day if someone asked/enquired about it.

I picked up the C17 in the end so will fit it tonight, looks simple enough.

I like the 7 day timer so the days when I am at training I can set the heat to come on just before I come home etc, and its easier than having to do change it every day or heating the house when there is nobody in.

    Hey All,
Right I thought I had this sorted but a bit confused now,the wiring diagram for the C17 is as follows,
    http://www.horstmann.co.uk/downloads/ElectronicDocuments/Central-Heating/CentaurPlus_C11-C17_installer_web.pdf

Then the current timer is wired as follows
    7C049D2A236847768D58DDA6EFC0CB96-0000323900-0003009893-00640L-9CF0C7876A9C403CBFAE7972BE5212EC.jpg

    So for the new switch
Brown is the the mains live - N
Blue is the neutral live - L
Black is the Boiler live out - 2
All good, but should I have a cable to go into port 4, so Switched Live Return to Boiler??

    Thanks in advance!
