Is this a Limousin Society sale, or a private one?
What kind of fertility guarantee do you get with say a 2011 heifer that's sold as "Not In Calf"?
I see there are no conditions of sale in the brochure.
What kinda money are we talking here for a 2011 heifer......?

are these types of sales just excess stock the breeders dont think good enough for their own herds ?

I dont think so,there are heifers offered for sale from top consistent cows that have bred top stuff, with some daughters and granddaughters off the mothers of some AI bulls.top heifers have made 8 thousand in the past maybe more Im not too sure.

Are these type of heifers more a "nice to have" rather than a good investment.

To the average suckler herd what are they bringing to the bottom line?

The herds are built to a stage where they have a herd of top quality cattle for sale and fair play to them.

yes I'd love to invest in one or 2 but would you be better off spending that money on a maybe 2/3 good quality suckler replacements that you can run with any good bull. Or even a good few bucket fed weanlings that aren't going too well at the moment and might leave a return next year?

depends on how much time money and effort your prepared to invest in them - a lot is required to achieve success and even more to make it profitable :(

Does Doreen Corridan own one of those herds? Is she a vet? She seems very knowledgable on all things bovine so things are starting to add up ;) Consistantly good stock, both Limousin and charolais.

both are sound people to deal with, and have wore their teeth with livestock.

remember way back years ago there was a training/ info night for pedigree/commercial breeders,

In the judging I put one of the Doreen's heifers down the line (forgetting the fact that it was on commercial traits the class was been judged on) My reason were were her feet and head, Quick as flash Doreen pointed out " 4 feet and head the first things that go to the skip in the factory " :o

Hopefully will get to the sale and I won't bring the cheque or trailer :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,087 ✭✭✭vanderbadger

was there for a while, seemed to be a dear sale in general i thought but ive never been to a limousin gig before so could be wrong, 2 lots made 8 while I was there , im not positive the 2 lot even sold at that price but that would have been the top, cheapest in calf heifer i saw was 2500 but most would have been 3-4k bracket, 10yr old cow and calf made 5k, calf was nice but stil i thought it was alot

As vanderbadger said some very good prices with Lot 22 and 25 both selling for €8000.

Lot 22 was a January 2011 Mas Du Clo heifer while Lot 25 was just over 12 months, born August 2011 and out of Attirant.

Lot 8 was the next highest price I saw which was €6400 for a January 2010 Wilodge Vantastic heifer due to Ampertaine Commander since 18/12/11

Lot 1 sold for €6000 for an August 2010 maiden heifer by Vermeil

From what I saw selling the average price was fairly good but I didn't see most of the younger heifers so that probably brought it down a bit, Not many that weren't sold and there was still some nice heifers sold for reasonable money

Like Vanderbadger and Muster Magic posted, some very good prices. There were buyers from Scotland, Wales, England, NI and the Isle of Man which helped push the prices on the choice lots. Also most of the top limo breeders seemed to be there aswell.

Top price I saw was lot 50(DOB - 27-Aug-11) which sold for 10,600. She was imported from France suckling her mother!!!

Majority of lots were sold. E3k to E5k would gave you a fair choice. Majority of the stock could be used as foundation stock for a predigree herd.

Unfortunately I forget my cheque book and had to go home empty handed!!!!!!! Maybe 2014!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Not this year, nothing took my fancy and I’d be divorced if I bought anymore. Had to laugh when I said maybe 2014, went but nothing I could afford:D didn’t get there in 2016 or this time, maybe 2020. Are you going yourself?

Lot one was the only one that I liked on paper. Seems like they went for realist prices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,129 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I popped down for a luck. Didn't trust myself so left the cheque book at home. Small enough crowd with very few, if any foreign buyers. I've been to a few of these Castleview/roundhill sales and this year for the first time, I thought castleview had a better lineup of heifers. Roundhill had a lot by stock bulls and these were back from the AI bred ones they had.
Still great lineup of cattle and all got new homes. Guy near me bought 3. One heifer of interest to me was out of the same cow, as a cow I have. She made €3,600.

A few heifers there by Cameos (LM2191). All nice muscley types.

Ya, she was a smasher. Thought she would have made more if later on in the sale.

Thank god I couldn't get over to it. I would have had a pop at her for that money.

Lot 26 On-Dit x Alfy. Made 1,900. Thought she was cheap. Long & boney.
    Lot 27, On-Dit x Lino, Made 3,300
    Lot 39, On-Dit x Otan . Made 2,300

I was on roundhill farm a couple of weeks ago. I have they are fantastic people. Took a look around their incalf heifers. I thought they was a few crackers. Their cows were very impressive. Serious frame and shape.
