    Hi Guys,

A quick one ..... I may have been a bit too optimistic see my other thread re carbon build up:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056742357

The car is slow about turning over. It give a decent puff of white smoke and the chugs for about 15 secs but then it's like a new car and it doesn't happen for the rest of the day. A friend suggested that I get somebody look at the injectors. Anybody any experience in this area? Would faulty injectors effect the emissions

    Thanks in advance:

These cars have copper seals on the inj's that leak. Is the cabin air intake smelling of smoke? Does the engine sound a bit rougher.

Its a large job, best off getting done with timing belt and water pump, otherwise you are looking at 4 hours labour.

There's only 56K miles on the clock .... so I'm hoping it'll be a while before I need to get the timing belt done! Will I be doing damage if I drive it like it is?

Get it plugged in and see if there are any fault codes present.
A diesel leak back test is the only real in car test you can be done on the injectors without removing and sending them off for testing...also with good diagnostic equipment the correction values for each injector can be checked.

If the injectors are at fault then it would be running poor most of the time,
The glow plugs are used when the engine is cold to help with poor running so one or more of these could have failed.

They are prone to the copper seals failing and allowing blow by from the combustion chamber.

Its normally obvious of you have a ticking type noise from the engine when the bonnet is open and a black build up around one of the injectors. The problem is that the longer you leave it the worse the problem gets as the carbon build up can make the injector almost impossible to remove even with the correct equipment.

There is no connection between having the timing belt done and servicing the injectors.

As ROW has said, to check the actual function of the injectors them selves the correct diagnostic equipment is needed, both computer(for the electronic function of the solenoids) and mechanical(leakback measurement).

Unfortunately, finding garages that have the correct equipment can be an issue.

If you do both together you pay the labour once. otherwise each job is 4 hours minimum.

Once again lads thanks for the advice .... I've put some more FORTE in the tanks and it seems to be running much cleaner as well as the engine ticking over better in the morning. Back in for a DOE retest so I'll let ye know how she gets on. Otherwise its running clean as a whislte ... a great drive 1.6 HDi 55MPG for for 2200 ... you can't go wrong!

They are both completely separate jobs with little or no overlap. In other words when changing the timing belt you don't have to go near the injectors, and vice versa.

So why would there be any saving by having both done together?

As George said above, there is no connection between the two, so even if you had both done together it would still take(for example) 4 hours to do the injectors and then 4 hours to do the timing belt.
