Hey, so apparently I am a web developer, web designer and programmer, I need to make a website for specific usage.

I got this idea perhaps you motorists can give quick feedback on this on how bad or good you think this is:

So as many of us know you can clock back the milage, but I came up with small idea not sure if it exists already: If you care about people who will buy your car in future, or you want to contribute to others safety in buying here is my idea: a website on which you don't need to pay anything, you can enter website and add an entry which asks for:
Number plate, current milage, current car condition (pre-made list of good, bad, awful etc..), color, recent faults perhaps? location (country only, no city as someone might use this to find expensive cars and go to that specific city to hijack it), and perhaps something else not sure what yet.

Then it saves the entry. Later when someone is buying car (hopefully community builds up lots of records and entries), you can enter website, enter the plate number and it will show all entries made to that plate, and dates accordingly, so it may appear as:

    Entry Date | Car | Reg | Year | Milage | Color | Recent Faults | Country

    April 13/2011 | Toyota Celica | 03-D-000 | 2003 | 123'271 km | Yellow | No faults known | Ireland

Then say you sold the car to some person, it changes owner, and so, you forget about it, you made the last entry:

    December 23/2011 | Toyota Celica | 03-D-000 | 2003 | 143'361 km | Yellow | Needs new cylinders | Ireland

A year later that person decides to sell it, another person finds car online, and reads the description of it:

Toyota Celica, red, plate reg: 03-D-000, low milage only 70'000 km, no faults at all.

So buyer goes on this site enters plate number and it shows the real info, now he can decide whether to buy it or not, if yes he can go and ask about cylinders or any other part it was specified, perhaps ask or find why car was repainted? maybe it was hijacked from somebody or so?

Perhaps make so people need to upload current photo of car? or milage meter as evidence of current milage?

    what do you think?
Could this help? or would this screw up peoples car sale ads?

Instant issue: beware of possible legal cases should people input bogey info that is later found by someone legitimately selling the car. This country has arcane slander laws...

I thought of that and thought maybe people who input info need to upload couple of pics of car, so later buyer can compare it? or have a phone number? Perhaps someone has any suggestion of way of proof without exposing much of personal details?

It's an excellent idea, but can it be secured from abuse?

For example, buyer goes to view a car. Seller won't budge on price. Buyer then uploads negative info in order to spoil the sale....

Its a nice idea - private car owners can already make a voluntary contribution to the INMR (Irish National Mileage Register).

TBH I don't think anyone is going to put anything negative about their car into a database that might make it difficult to sell in the future. We see enough problems on our car history reports at the moment that the current owner is not disclosing at the time of sale.

Working with car data is not something that should be entered into lightly. It's a very important responsibility that requires a significant investment in data handling, technology and customer service - we've been doing it for over 6 years and recognise every day just how important our information is to buyers and sellers alike. Getting it wrong is not something that's tolerated lightly.

Yes I have to come up with a secure thing for that.
    Any ideas?

That's the thing the legit owners can just put their data into there, and in future then it will be re-selling by other owner it might come in use, once it entered it cannot be removed,
    so say:

    Year 2011 - Car milage: 80'000 km
    year 2012 - car milage: 60'000 km
How is that possible? I could make it so user has to submit photo of milage meter, then buyer would have questions how did that milage went down?

ah after checking that INMR website its clearly that there is no need to create an alternative, guess I will have to scrap that idea and continue thinking what other useful website in Ireland people may need :(

mods can lock thread if they wish.
