I have seen on the Iarnrod Eireann website that there were delays to Northern Commuter and Malahide services this evening due to a train failure at Clongriffin.

It was the 16.50 service from Connolly to Belfast. It is seen from Irish Rail's Twitter page that there was apparently a lack of information about that service being broken down.

Seem to be having an issue with copy/paste from one of their comments, but on that feed they respond to someone clearly stating its the result of a train breaking down. Would of been long before you threw up this thread. What lack of information are you on about? I as a commuter don't need to know what's wrong with the train, knowing they know there's a fault and they are working on it is enough for me.

That thread seems to be more for organised/planned disruptions and has not been updated since last year.

Nothing at all to do with that. The Enterprise failed north of Clongriffen blocking the northbound line.

They had to wait for a second locomotive to haul the Enterprise out of the way and back to Connolly.

    Locomotive and points failures

Here's what I could figure out, on what was a bad night for irish Rail:
16.50 Connolly to Belfast failed at Clongriffen at 17.00, full with passengers. It stayed stuck northbound for another 2 hours, before another locomotive hauled it back full of passengers to Connolly, where they would transfer to the delayed 19.00 Connolly-Belfast (that was 40mins late) and arrived into Belfast at 10pm. So if you left Dublin on the 16.50, and you got into Belfast at 22.00, a journey of 5 hours 10mins.

So for the Northern suburban users:
16.44 Pearse to Drogheda, got stuck directly behind the Belfast train, around Howth Junction for about 1 and 3/4 hours I reckon. All passengers eventually offloaded, and train sent back to Connolly. Service behind this was cancelled, and very few of these passengers got on the 17.13, as this already left passengers behind in Connolly.
17.07 Connolly to Balbriggan was cancelled
17.13 Pearse to Dundalk, was held in Connolly for about 1 and 1/4 hours (maybe more). It then had a long wait just south of Howth Junction while the Belfast train was recovered. I eventually got this service, and it arrived in 1 hour 40 mins late into my station. Also stopped at all stations.
16.50 Bray to Drogheda was held at Pearse first, then Connolly for about 50 mins. It was due leave Connolly at 17.35, but I reckon it left around 19.00
Per Irish Rail website last night at 20.00:
D816 Pearse to Dundalk, due into Drogheda normally at 19.03, actual 20.40
D817 Pearse to Drogheda, due into Drogheda normally at 19.20, actual 21.00

There must have been a signicant problem when they went to recover the failed Belfast train, as given how frequently this fails, you would have thought it should have been a lot quicker. Lots of very unhappy passengers last night, and the complete lack of information about estimates for the length of delay just added to frustrations.

At least DART passengers could get the bus...in theory....

Oh yes, and there was a points failure at Grand Canal Dock at 17.30 leading to 20 min delays to southbound DARTS.
