TVs under two years may not need soarview box

    Just wanted to post this.

Today i helped my brother in law get Saorview on his family TV.

Its a two year old Samsung TV that had very bad reception for irish tv. The problem was that the aerial was run through a booster / splitter in the attic (that was years old). We simply re ran the aerial cable direct from a standard roof top aerial to the Samsung tv. We then went into "Anthena" settings and searched for TV and Digital channels in options. Without the use of a saorview box or soarview approved tv we were able to receive perfect sound and picture for all Irish channels

My point is - if you have a tv that is only a few years old and can proccess MPEG 4 then a saorview box might not be neccessary. First try tune in digital channels using the options.

I understand this may be posted elsewhere but still wanted to post. I also want to state is that anyone with a newish tv should do as above first before buying anything. They might be pleasantly suprised.

In most cases Just check the name and model number with this list of Approved TV's http://www.saorview.ie/productcategory/idtvs/

That's what we've been saying here for years when someone asks about upgrading to Saorview - check your existing TV first. There are many TVs out there in peoples homes with MPEG-4 decoders and not on the approved list.

My 4 and half year old Sony works quiet happily with Saorview and has done so since the pre-launch engineering test transmissions started from my local transmitters in Mar 2009.

Just looking through my user manual for my tv and came across page talking about digital switch over and states my tv has a digital tuner built in.does this mean i only need an aerial to get rte etc?

Just because a TV has a digital tuner does not automatically mean it can be used with Saorview - it must be MPEG4 compatible as well.

Post the brand and model number of the TV and it should be possible to verify either way.

No. Philips TV's with an MPEG 4 decoder have a suffix H not D.

.... but remember that just because your TV is not on that list does not mean that the Tv will not work with Saorview. The TV's on Navarres link above are only the ones certified having went through an approval process to get the Saorview Badge.

Rule of thumb. Most Samsung/Sony/LG/Phillips TV's bought since late 2009 will work.

Check your manual and see if it says anywhere in the spec - MPEG4 AVC (H264) which is normally in the last few pages of the manual.
