Something Fishy?

Met a bloke tonight about a car.

His name is not on the logbook although he says he bought it a few months ago for the sole purpose of fixing a scratch it had and selling it on at a profit - he never taxed it or sent the paperwork to Shannon as he says it would be better for the car to have only 1 previous owner.

I have the previous owner's name and address (from the logbook) and I asked the Gardai if the car had been reported as stolen (it hasn't). I did a cartell check and there's no finance and there's no discrepancy with the mileage.

Something seems fishy, though and I can't put my finder on what exactly.

A check engine light came on when I went to take it for a spin but he claims it was a clutch sensor...?

    Any advice?

What sort of car is it, don't take any explanations for the light, it could be anything.

How fast can you run op? If in doubt, pass on it.

Did you find the car online, can you link to the ad?

I personally would go with gut feeling here, if it feels dodge walk away. Plenty other cars out there.

Try ringing directory enquires on 11850 with the name and address
and see if you can get to talk to the old owner.

I got it on done deal - I don't want to link to it because I don't want to defame the seller - I might just be overly paranoid.

Why would someone drive a car around without taxing it or sending the logbook to Shannon for 4-6 months???

If I didn't trust the vendor I wouldn't buy any car off him tbh.

    To not to tax it
To be able to drive it with driving other cars cover
To fool garda with "I just bought it" when it is stopped for reasons above

Op it's just to much money too new off a car to be taking chances on run a mile. No one buys a 2008 to turn a few bob on its too new unless he's a dealer. Also warning lights on a dash are their for a reason so there is something wrong with the car. Finally if you buy it you are giving a man money for a car which technically he doesn't own. If it was 1000 euro of a car you might take the risk but not on such a new car.

Op, try and make contact with the previous registered owner and ask them a few questions about the history of the car.

The main reason that I can think of why the seller didn't change the registration documents into his name is that he is selling cars on the side, isn't registered as a trader and doesn't want to draw attention from Revenue. Worst case scenario, the car could be stolen with false number plates and registration documents of a similar car that is clean.

Better to regret not buying it than to regret buying it.

I'd be running. That you're asking is it fishy makes it seem to me that it's a great price you don't want to pass up. If so, along with everything else alarm bells would be ringing for me. Too good to be true and all that...

Is the seller also a dealer.
Post a link to the ad.
    Or
Phone him again asking about his car for sale, if he asks which one then you know.

If not he should have changed the details when he bought the car,

If you sell a post-April 2004 vehicle privately, part B of the Vehicle Registration Certificate should be completed and returned to the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division.

If you sell your vehicle to a motor dealer, you have to complete a Form RF105 (pdf) (Notes), a valid garage code must be supplied on behalf of the motor dealer. Failure to supply this code will result in the change of ownership being rejected

Did you meet him outside the same house the car is pictured outside?

I'd have that checked at them min incase it's the DPF they've been known to give trouble in these cars and can cost in and around 2k to fix properly.

Although in saying that I think I'd pass on what you've experienced so far.
