Does anyone know the roadmap for contactless payments here?

IPhone 5 will probably start the ball rolling...

Is the iPhone 5 going to get NFC? Some reports have said no. Some of the higher end Androids already have it, HTC One X, Galaxy Nexus, S3. Paypal are already on the ball: http://gizmodo.com/5935887/paypal-is-testing-out-mobile-payment-at-mcdonalds-restaurants

Thats probably true, companies often 'forget' about android. "Oh the new iphone has a NFC chip. Better start using mobile payments"

Even though my phone has had it for over a year now

Apple would be mad to let NFC miss in this years update.

The chip must be in there even if the software/ hardware is not ready from retailers.

Pent up demand will see huge sales and the phone being used for the next ~3 years by which time NFC will be huge (I think ;-)). If the chip is not there its a massive loss to them and contactless payment.

That's the type of thing Apple are notorious for though, they hold off on features that should be added so they can add it later in an updated model
