Possible to get a Bo-Bo engine lighter than 83 tonnes?

The leading European-built diesel locomotives, Bombardier TRAXX DE and Siemens Vectron DE, both weigh that much. The 121 class weighed 64 tonnes, and the 141 and 181 class weighed 67 tonnes. Where could IE get diesel engines that would not breach axle limits presuming an uptick in economic traffic necessitates a corresponding increase in railfreight?

well the obvious way to keep axle weight down is to have more axles.

I suppose the answer would be a batch of 30 odd freight locos mounted on two 6 wheel bogies.

DSC 2257 isn't sitting in your back yard is it? I remember seeing these yokes all over Welly harbour way back along with, I'm sure, ex BR MkIIs?

about 18km down the road she is. There are two more stationed in the New Plymouth yard, don't know numbers but one is a giant RC plaything

Replace the 201s and DVTs on the DD and Mk4 fleets with single cab powercar-generator units.
Buy some shunters to move things around rather than use 2000-3000hp mainline locos to do it.
Bring the "stored" 201s back on line.
Borrow 112 when NIR don't need it.

By the time any such scenario unfolds European emissions regulations is going to make new diesel locomotives expensive - better to make do with the EMD645 and 710 platforms to hand which will be supported for the next couple of decades.
