I went to the dentist today and he took an xray of my crown and showed me where a root had not been filled when i had it done 12 years ago.

    Should i be worried

You can crown a tooth with no root canal treatment. If the tooth is alive then no, if the nerve/pulp is dead/dying then yes.....

A vital or living tooth is preferable in all situations, you only do a root canal if the nerve is dead or for a few rarer technical reasons.

Ah, I don't think a dentist would draw the patients attention to a crown being placed on a tooth without a root canal treatment, that would not be unusual. I suspect OP had a crown on a root canal treated molar and one root is un filled on the x-ray. Op why worry about it after 12years?, some perfectly filled root canals don't last this long. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Obviously there are some times where you do half a rootcanal. (if the fee is low and you have to hurry:D)

OP there are millions of bad rootcanals done all over the world which seem to hold up ok. millions more don't. Your tooth may very well have been fine for 12 years, and may last another 12. will it last for life? You have to go with the opinion of the dentist who has seen the xray and is treating you.

    to fill you in....
I got my teeth cleaned and checked in slovakia with the guy who did my wifes crown and RC
his xray of my bonded crown showed a root cleaned out but not filled o my premolar.I asssume this is what the other Slovak dentist referred to last time but my wife translated as decay.
this dentist had perfect English so we were able to talk.
he suggested getting it redone due to potential health risks.

what surprises me is that my Irish Dentists never mentioned it to me.
I've had 2 in 12 years. Either they weren't worried or didn't see it.

How can you tell a root canal is cleaned on an X-ray the canals would want to have been greatly shaped to be certain.

Either way you seem to trust this dentist and generally not trust the dentists on here, so follow their advice.

    Annnnnndddddd we're off..........

and what exactly you mean by that?

based on posts 4 and 5 I think its a reasonable assumption to make.
though mine was done in Belfast it was the average rate at the time so there was no cost cutting involved compared to other Belfast rates.

either my superbly trained Irish dentists thought it was ok or they didn't see it.

if I can see it on the xray I assume they can too and then thought it was ok to leave as it was,

the Slovak orthodontist said it to me and advised it be done. He specialises in rc and crowns.

his advise was that though it wasn't causing any pain it doesn't necessarily say its ok to leave. He wasn't even touting for the business. When I asked he couldn't fit me in:D
I asked a legitimate question and all I got legitimate answers to a point.

OK, but then you make assumptions on who is right and wrong.... So if you don't know what you are talking about then you can't assess who's opinion is best.

Eh no, he says he specialises in root canal and crowns, a specialist doesnt specialise in two areas by definition. An endodontist specialises in root canal and a prosthodontist specialises in crowns. A orthodontist specialises in braces.

Either way, if you trust his opinion your questions here serve no purpose except to troll. Thread closed.
