Declaring car off the road - suspending road tax

    Hi,

I need to suspend the motor tax on my car as I won't be using it for 4 months.

A Gard told me I had to fill out an RF100 form, although this forms looks like one you'd fill out when you want to tax the car.

What do I need to do to a) Declare the car if off the road, b) suspend the tax?

What do you mean by suspend the tax?

If the tax is out, you do nothing. When you go to tax it again you fill in the form and get it signed at a Garda station.

If the car is taxed already for the months its going to be off the road then theres nothing you can do about that.

By 'suspend' the tax, do you mean e.g. you have 6 months tax on the car now, you don't use it for 4 months and then you 'resume' and still have 6 months left?

    I don't think that's an option.

At the moment you don't tax it when it's off the road

Then when you go to renew the for has a section for off the road declarations. Sign that and put in the dates it was off the road and get a Garda to sign and stamp it

At the moment, anyone can do this and the guards can only take your word on it so they will eventually change the way this is done

But for now, do nothing and just don't tax your car till your ready to get back on the road!

When you go to tax it again you fill in the form and get it signed at a Garda station.

There was some report* last year about having to declare in advance that its going to be off the road. Too many people letting it slide for a few months then popping into the Gardai and getting it retrospectively declared 'off the road'.

I don't know if they ever brought this in.

*Report in the media/news sense, i.e. may not have any basis in fact.

No. It has no basis in fact and hasnt been brought in.

This really needs a sticky at this stage.

Can you declare it off the road prior to it being taken off the road? Or is it just get the declaration of non-use signed and stamped?

No you can't declare in advance. You can only declare that the car was off the road. BTW, the Garda signature is only to record that he witnessed you making a declaration of non-use.

    To confirm:

My tax is just up this week. I'm working abroad from this Friday until xmas. When I go to tax it then, I don't want to have to back tax it.

Can you really just ask a Gard at the local ststaion to sign this form and he has to take your word for it? I can imagine how much this is abused.

The Garda is not verifying that your car was off the road, they are simply witnessing your signature so that if someone finds that your car was on the road during the period and they decide to prosecute you for making a false declaration, the Garda will be called to give evidence that they saw you sign the form, that's all.

Make sure your car is not driven or parked up in a public place (road, car park, etc) while you're away if you want to avoid becoming liable for motor tax.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
