Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone out there has information on the cheapest way to communicate mobile to mobile across the boarder from NI to Rep Ireland. Currently living in the South and will be moving just North of the boarder but my husband will continue to work in the South (with an O2 IRL mobile). I will prob be calling an texting his O2 IRL mobile but at the minute im a bit concerned about rates etc. I don't have a mobile provider in the UK yet...waiting to see what the best option will be. Thanks

Well I've been in the same predicament as you regarding International minutes.

My way was to buy a cheap Meteor phone, for yourself as you're going 'abroad' Then you can text 'Europe' to 50104 to receive free roaming in Europe (free to receive calls and texts). Then it will be simply free for you to receive calls and texts. You won't be able to send texts however unless you top up but you have 300 free texts online for that. Then your husband can simply call you using his own minutes or credit or free calls or whatever he currently has.

    Might suit but might not.

    Three Julst Like Home service.

Once you are on their network, it makes no difference whther you are in Ireland, Italy, UK or anywhere they operate.

If you both have net connections, skype it for free, sound only if you want to save on bandwidth. A modern smartphone can allow tethering, using a 3G signal to connect a wifi laptop via the phone.

If you are moving very close to the border the point may be moot as you'll have O2 Ireland signals (and perhaps no NI signal).

If you have an O2 prepaid phone then there is no charge for receiving calls in NI, so your husband can use his minutes to call you. You can send webtexts for nothing from your home broadband.

Likewise with Vodafone Ireland, no charge to receive calls in NI.
Vodafone UK have an "Ireland" package, then your Husband would need a good deal for calling you (Three?, Tesco?).

Three is an idea, but they have no service in NI in border areas for the most part.

If you can get Skype on your phone, get it and call for free over Wifi/Internet.

Why not just use Viber? I use it all the time to text my friends here or back "home" in Sweden.
Really handy if you're mostly at home and use the wifi to connect to internet.

If you go for Three, you'll get your Three Like Home, allowing you to call or text or use data as you please, without limits. You also get free Skype on your mobile, using their special Three app.

The Skype service was a feature a year or so a go, but since the arrival of unlimited data, it is no longer advertised, but it is fully functional. If you have Android phones, I can upload the dedicated Three Skype app. Unlike the official one, from the Play Store, you will have your contacts and whatnot appearing like contacts, but you can make and receive the calls like a normal call- so it is far easier to use, and easier on battery.

Give me a shout if you need it. Three customers, I can also upload it for you.
    I only used it yesterday.
