i'm just wondering if people remove these some times if there is a build of sludge etc while chaning the oil just to give it a good clean

    Nope, not me anyway.

Doubt it as some of the bolts are a curse to get at, plus there would be a gasket on it to seal it which would have to be replaced each time. But if you use good quality oil and change it on/before time you'd have no need to.

Not normal practice, but would be a good idea on some cars that can have a habit of gauze in pickup getting blocked. I'm thinking Toyota VVTi's, Volkswagen 1.8T, Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 diesel.

Also worth doing on the Peugeot 1.6HDi engine as fitted to Focus, Volvo S40, etc. The drain plug is not at the lowest point on the sump of these so the oil will never completely drain, leaving possibility of build-up of sludge.

If you do decide to drop the sump for a thorough cleaning, once every few years (50k miles ???) should be often enough.
