NCT fail on worn balljoints

I left the NCT centre without checking this so wondering if anyone could shed any light on it for me.

Got a fail on the offside front suspension ball joint. Thing is I dont know which one they are referring to. The one right in at the wheel looks in good shape, rubber is good on it. But the smaller one nearer the center of the undercarriage is visibly worn with perished rubber.
My father is a retired mechanic and was sayin that only one that is ever really changed is the one at the wheel (which we changed on the opposite side for an NCT test 3 years ago)

So Im not sure what to do on this. NCT queries are no help either really. Bar getting the centre to ring me back on it, which may end up in me having to bring it back there to confirm what the issue is, which is a ball ache in the extreme.....

Replace both as you're at it, same work, don't forget wheel alignment when you finish.

Any time I've had a bushing or ball joint fail in an NCT, they've very kindly marked it with yellow crayon. Not sure if this was for my benefit or theirs in the retest, but they've done it a few times and in different test centres.

Yeah thing is Im not going to spend a cent more on this retest than I have to. The reason being that this car passed its NCT April gone. But because of the wonderful rule about retesting when the original registration date comes around, Ive had to have it tested again in August. Different centre, and this time everything is wrong with it! (Despite the fact the car is only a sunday driver and has only done 2500 miles since the last test)
So Im not too interested in doing any more than the minimum required tbh. The bullshít cars fail on these days is beyond a joke.

Yeah thats what I was hoping to see when I had in over the pit, but surprise surprise, nothing to go on.
