    Just had a break down.

Called out break down service. Found two bolts, timing belt for air condition pump on the sump cover and the pump falling off to the side of the engine block.

One of the bolts has sheared off into the engine block.

Call out lads says they havent seen anything like this before.

Any one know what kind of job will be needed to be done to sort this? Still under warranty. Last service at 23k Km next one due at 43k Km with 39k Km on the clock. Engine is the 1.6 hdi

Car was bout in Windsor Bray in January. Do they provide a courtesy car? This is the one week I can not do without a car!

Hardly a timing belt I'd imagine! It's the a/c compressor drive belt (may have other functions).

If it's simply a case of replacing bolts and refitting compressor and belt it's a pretty simple one.

If collateral damage has been done it's anyone's guess.

sorry yes its the alternator belt

I'm most worried about the sheared part of the bolt that's in the engine block

How could it have gotten inside the block itself?

It's bolted on to the engine block but bolt sheared off.

As in still where it's meant to be without a head or it's fallen off?
Either way it's not an issue, they can tap or drill out the remaining bit.

Still where it's meant to be but with out its head. I have that on the kitchen table!

Sure that's no problem.............. aren't you an engineer btw :p

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 23,243 Mod ✭✭✭✭godtabh

In this case the wrong type of engineer but I did understand what shearing meant!

The call out lads seemed to think it could be a problem accessing the engine block to get it out. They just have me worried.

Its concerns me some what to see something like that to happen a relatively new car

Well it defo shouldn't happen at all, especially to a new ish car. As it's under warranty I wouldn't be at all worried about what endeavours will be required to access the headless bolt to remove it :)

Never heard of this happening before...
The aux belt is tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner so the belt could'nt have been over tightened.
My guess is the bolts must have worked there way loose and then sheared off or they bolts were over tightned from day one and sheared...:(
The fact that these engines are all aluminium its unusual that bolts would come loose....

Once its under warranty then Citroen will have to repair like new.

You can see in the diagram below there are three securing bolts which hold on the compressor onto the block....There seems to be a sandwich plate
inbetween the compressor and block so this could also be the culprit....

The first diagram shows the correct torque required for each bolt of the compressor securing bolts.

If you can't make out the diagrams pm me an email address & your cars vin/chassis number and i'll send on the info...:)

    Hope you get sorted.

Cheers for the diagrams. Very helpful

I assume the 3rd bolt is gone. No sign of it

Did the compressor fall off altogether or is it still held on by 1/2 bolts..?
Once the tension is gone from the aux belt then the belt had to fall off.

These engines changed in 2011 so you could have the newer engine which is alittle different than the older Dv6 engine.

Its hard to understand how 3 bolts can shear at the one time...
But i suppose anything is possible.

I can post up your C4's correct part(s) diagram if you post/pm your vin number...:)

Only one bolt sheared. The other just looks like it slid out!

I'll get thr vin number tomorrow

Tell them very nicely that you absolutely need a car. They'll rent one for you if they have to.

Just on to them again. They said maintenance don't have one and they'll ask sales. If they don't give us one I'll go mad as I've to be in Galway, Cork and Belfast this week with work and if I cant drive I'm ****ed.

Their Gold Standard leaflet states that alternative travel will be arranged.

They'll try to wriggle out of it if they can, you just have to be firm with them. Tell them you need a car, that you absolutely can't do without one. Maybe give Citroen Ireland a buzz? Any time i've had a car break down under warranty i've dealt with the importer rather than the dealership for pickup & replacement.

That probably be the best thing to do.

After they pick up the car I'll ring them again and see what the story is

I rang Citroen Ireland. They advised to get the car sent to the nearest Citroen garage and they will provide a courtesy car.

Hopefully its closer to getting sorted now
