As We Edge Closer to 20/12/2012....

What do you believe will happen that day? Or will we all just wake up on 21/12/2012 and say "OMG, I am gonna have to buy a Xmas present for crabby oul' Aunty Rosie now, and I will have to get a TV Licence and pay the bloody 2013 Household TAX, blah-de-blah, aka life goes on as normal.

Or do you believe we won't wake up at all, or if we do it will be to a somehow seriously changed world?

Personally? I really do not know either, but I have read a prophesy that 20/12/2012 ticks the box so strongly because it is the "switch-on" date to count down for the FINAL 3.5years till the world ends. Apparently, these last years will be filled with all sorts of calamity and tragedy, on a scale never before seen. Which is sorta happening now, with the various Global bad news stories. It also un-nerves me slightly too that Ladbrookes are taking bets on a complete Global Food shortage next year, due to failed crops caused by awful weather, droughts, etc etc worldwide.

What's your own take on 20/12/2012?

There is no prediction about 2012, it's the resetting of the Mayan calender. No 2012 doomsday was ever predicted by the Mayans.

Like all 'predictions' that have ever happened, they come & pass & we wait on the next one & the one after that. Ya know why? Because predicting or seeing the future isn't possible :)

1999, 2000, 2001, 2012, it's all the same nonsense. Do some real research into the actual Mayan calender & you'll get the truth.

I would answer this question online, but the internet and computers in general all failed in Y2K.

Nothing is going too happen, it's just the end of the Mayan calendar, like our 12 month calendar a new calendar year will start. The end of the Mayan calendar coincides with the end of an age in the precession of the equinoxes

It's all interpreted wrong. Nothing will happen except the worst snowfall in Irish history at this time. Also major breakdown of the eurozone. That sums it up so happy christmas.

Add it to the list of all other previous end of days dates.

    There will be more .

    There's been Muslim/Catholic tensions for decades {centuries really}.
War with Iran has been looming for decades.
Justin Beiber though, that is worrying...

About 154,889 people won't wake up on 21/12/2012 but that's about the same death rate as every other day

The world is not ending. We have a few billion years before the Sun engulfs us or our galaxy collides with Andromeda. But every day, for a hundred and 50 thousand of us, the world does end. Just live your life as best you can and don't be worrying about silly made up prophesies.

That combined with the fact that they never actually predicted anything, I think safely 'busts this myth'

According to the X Files that is the date alien colonization of the earth will begin.

This is also my prediction, that show was right about a lot of things!

I'm either going to sober up / start drinking industry scale on that date. That'll be what the Maya girl was on about. My cat is also due to give birth to something then judging by her behaviour this week.

Unless I stay up late, I will go to bed. I absolutely believe that 20/12/2012 will be the last day ever before the 21/12/2012. I believe (OK. Some wiggle room here...) that I will wake up on a Friday morning on the 21st. The Mayans won't. So much for the Mayans...

    Nothing will happen.

Even if we ignore the fact that the Mayans never said "the world will end", and that it's just their calendar starting again or whatever, and we accept that they predict the world will end on this date... Why should we care what the Mayans said?

Proponents of this theory like to point out that the Mayans were an advanced culture, ahead of other contemporaneous cultures in various areas. That may be true, but they're bloody not more advanced than any modern cultures!! Any scientific or other methods that they used then, we have considerably more sophisticated ones today, and we have no indication that the world will end on the day in question.

The Mayans never saw Cortez coming.
As predictions of demise and destruction go, they don't exactly have a shining track record.

Indeed, the 1999 gang, the 2000 crew, the Millennium Bug posse, & all the other groups havn't had much success either. Though to be fair to the Mayans, at least they didn't actually predict anything unlike the other dozens of groups who did.

Well, the sensationalists need to have a getout clause of course. Seriously though the thoughts of three more years now of listening about non existent Mayan prophecies isn't appealing :o

Maybe that's the count down to the prophesy as to when the actual prediction will be predicted?

I view the whole thing rather like I do with every calendar that has run out. Buy next year's and you'll be fine. The 12,000 year Mayan claendar is about to run out. That's all.

Do you REALLY think that a bunch of neolithic astronomers, who did not even have the wheel, could predict the ending of our part of the universe to any degree of accuracy?

    I'm a total sceptic.

And you are 100% correct, its the dawn of a new age in the Mayan calender.

It'll be like in the Simpsons, nothing happens then someone says they forgot to carry a one or something and the real date is actually in six months time. Rinse and repeat in six months time.

This. It's the exact same as when we went from 1999 to 2000. They just have longer periods in between the roll over.

Was looking at some of the New Age and Doom internet forums. One of them had a huge hysterical thread about half the earth being in darkness which unleashed some serious convulsions until someone pointed out that this event is called night.

The internet is some education into how many people will believe in half nothings, based on no evidence and lock themselves into the 'Hollywood' version and defend it.
