This post lists the films voted as "Films of the Week", which while not entirely comprised of "must see classics" (eg Meet The Spartans being in there because trolls, basically) is still a solid list of films that are somewhere between good and excellent. I've found several gems that I wouldn't have otherwise watched through said list, so it's worth a look :)

I'd put the 20s and 50s ahead of the seventies myself, if we're to engage in such an abstract exercise ;) The 40s make a convincing case too...

Alright, I'll play* ;) I've restricted myself to one film per director, as otherwise this could be probably be entirely constructed by Japanese films :o. In no particular order, and there's still tonnes of much talked about classics from the era I've yet to get around to (only have ever seen the first half of The Searchers, for some bizarre reason).

    Tokyo Story
    The Seventh Seal
    Rashomon
    The Life of O-Haru
    Mon Oncle
    Sunset Boulevard
    The 400 Blows
    High Noon
    Vertigo
    Night of the Hunter

*disclaimer: I don't particularly consider myself particularly biased towards any decade (every decade has its own unique identity and charms), but I'm always thrilled at the innovation that was occurring particularly in the 1950s (1920s too, as I continue my explorations of silent cinema). And there were just more films that suit my own particular taste in cinema for whatever reason.

You will get all three (drama/thriller/comedy) in Midnight Run. A classic which shows De Niro can do comedy.
