livestock trailer

    Hi i'm in the market for a new trailer. was reckoning something round a 10x5. dont really want to spend over 3k but would rather 2.5k. whats my best option. what should i look out for? is there much diference towing a 12 x 5 or 5'6" than the 10 x 6 and what can i expect to get for that money? say on the 12x5 and 10x6 you have the same sq foot but will they hold the same animals when loading (probably seems like a stupid question but you know what i mean)will be towing with a 2.5 turbo van. any advice greatly apreciated. thanks chippy

    Have a 12 x 5 and it's a easier to use the mirrors! Shop around there is lots of them out there, but watch out for stolen ones.

    If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

    you will probably take more in a 12x5 than a 10x6. Lots of trailers have had easy lives especially ones on dairy farms but there are a few that have seen serious road. personally I would only buy a hudson as I run 2 of them 12x6 and they take serious abuse. bought a new secondhand one recently that was 5 months old for big discount over new. Everything above board, guy just changed his mind

    id agree with bob my personal pick is a hudson , sealed floor, rump bar try to get one with a drop down flap on front - saves juice when empty
    would you not just go for a 12 x 6 - more choice?

    At 6ft wide your talking about demountable boxes, right?

    If so I've heard their a pig to pull around and wouldnt be near as stable. Never had one but so I'm told.

    My choice would be the 12x5'5. Might be the same in square feet but I'd imagine you'd always get more in a longer box.

    There are a few tri-axle 12's knockin around now aswell. Dont know if their much better than twins but we've tri-axle 14's that ride better than any 12 twin's we've ever owned.

    Agree with the lads about Hudsons being good but we've two Nugents that see serious miles every year and so far have held up well.

    I had a 14' (i think) hudson livestock one lately and the van was under way too much pressure. thats the reason i reckon the twelve ft at twin axle would still be too hard on the van . thats the reason i was looking at the ten ft . keeps it a bit tighter to the van. remember its not a landcruiser and if i had a bigger trailer that was loaded to the front the back axle of the van would be down very low or is my reasoning completly off.

    10x5 with the 16" wheels on the outside is max for you. What sort of van are we talking?

    If you get one longer than 10ft make sure you have a dividing gate and its loaded even.You really need a 5ft10 wide if your drawing cattle as they get into trouble if they try to turn in a 5ft and most do try to turn when you let down the ramp. I only keep sheep and I changed from a 10*5 to a 12*5 and find a much smoother trailer to pull, just seems to float along compared to the 10ft and because its the width of the L200 Idon't have to watch for water cuts, parked cars etc. I also pull it with a peugeot 407 no bother

    My only experience is it is a way easier to load animals into a 12ft trailer than 10ft as they are in before they realise it.They don t have time to turn back.:)

    10x5 with the 16" wheels on the outside is max for you. What sort of van are we talking?
    long wheel base vw transporter. i found the hitch height can be an issue with some trailers.

    I had the same issue as I have a builders trailer and a 12ft cattle box with hitches at different heights. I bought one of these

    +1 on the dividing gate.

    Last thing you want to do is give them room to move around.
    Cos sure as night follows day, one of 'em will take into a fit of gymnastics in the back corner and next thing your pulling your "oh jebus" face up front:eek:

    We're looking at purchasing a 2nd Hand Trailer 10ft / 12Ft.
    Probably go with the Ivor due to the easy load decks.
    Have noticed the wheels are smaller on the 10ft than on the 12Ft.
    Will be using a L200, will the wheel size make a difference?

    It had the land rover wheels, good trailer except putting up & down the decks when full.
    Don't the 12ft & 14ft have the same size wheel as the older version

    I have a 14 ft aswell and the whelks are a good bit bigger than the standard size wheels on the 10ft. Iv no sheep so no need for decks!

    Use New 14ft glides behind L200, but hitch is lower on Pajero & doesn't handle as well.
