Films with music as one of the main themes...

What movies do you recommend. I'm looking for movies with music as a central theme, like High Fidelity, Empire Records, Almost Famous, Singles...

There's lots of films with great music & soundtracks, but I'm not looking for these... eg. The Crow, Easy Rider, Platoon. In fact The Crow may belong to the first group...

Rock Star - Mark Wahlberg is in it. Zakk Wylde plays one of the guitarists in the band that the whole film is about. He and other real life musicians wrote the bands' songs too. Quite a good film!

I believe Jason Bonham(John Bonham's son) was in it too.

As for movies with music as the main theme.
Paradise Lost - It's actually a documentary film, and it doesn't necessarily have music AS the main theme. But the events that Paradise Lost depict involve musical influence.

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny - It's basically a musical comedy.

Grand Theft Parsons - Again music isn't really the main theme. But it focuses on the death of country musician Gram Parson.

The 2003 film 'Tupac: Resurrection' came to mind for some reason, well worth a watch imho.

A few people have compiled movies lists based on music themes on IMDb. There's one with 91 different titles here.

One that really stands out for me is "Crazy Heart" - Oscar-winning performance from Jeff Bridges, a straight-forward but terrific script and a cracking soundtrack (which you don't have to be a country music fan to appreciate).

Across The Universe, not a great film though imo

Notorious - Biggie smalls biopic. Fairly good if you're into hip hop.

Almost famous - Story of a teenage rock journalist who tours with the fictional band stillwater. Absolutely brilliant film.

"Dig!" - Brilliant and hilarious documentary (although criticised by the actual subjects) about The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Well worth a watch, even if you're not a fan of the bands.

Ray, however Jamie Foxx does very little singing himself, most of it is him lip syncing to Ray Charles himself.

Whats Love Got To Do With It
. Like above Angela Basset does very little if any singing at all, vocals are provided by Turner.

    Rattle And Hum
    ? Does that count ?

The trailer focuses more on the violence but the music is a central part of it.

Amadeus - about Mozart, so classical music

The Soloist was alright, but you'd watched it more for Robert Downey Jr. than for the music tbh :P

24 Hour Party People is a great film. Set in Manchester and charting the independent music scene there from the late 70's up to the early 90's. Some funny moments too.

Love that film. However I wouldn't go so far as to say that music is one of it's main themes, certainly as regards the storyline. I don't care much for the Arctic Monkeys or Alex Turner but it is a nice soundtrack and suits the film really well.
