Question re renewing learning permit

My missus's 2nd learning permit will expire in 2 weeks. She is very much a beginner and has only driven in the city 5/6 times although has 'driven' regularly in industrial estates whilst practising.

As far as i know you need proof of having applied for a test before getting the 3rd L Permit. She is a good bit away from doing her test as still inexperienced.

The complicating factor is that she is due to have a baby in 2 months. This has slowed her practising etc.

    My questions are:

Should she just let the learning permit expire and get her 3rd one in 6-9 mths time when things have settled down?

Should she just apply for the test, get the new license and postpone any tests on the grounds of medical reasons?

    the first option is cheaper.

it makes no difference if the permit goes outta date. my 4th permit went outta date in 2009. i didn't need a car so i didn't renew it.

now i need a car so i applied for the test and now im applying for the 5th permit. which i know i will get. (confirmed by the motor tax office)

save your money and don't apply for the test if your going to have to postpone.

Ok. Thanks. I had thought that if it was left expire, she may have to do the theory test again or something else onerous. She seems to be exempt from those as she got her first license as a teen.
